00:00:00Marc:So, let's do some back in the day stuff.
00:00:10Marc:Back in the day, well, mostly back in the old garage, in the original garage.
00:00:15Marc:When we started doing the show and I'd have musical guests on, I'd request that if they were capable, could they play some music?
00:00:23Marc:Could they play some acoustic music?
00:00:25Marc:I was no technician.
00:00:27Marc:I was dealing with very raw bone stuff.
00:00:29Marc:I was very committed to one particular mic.
00:00:31Marc:I have no studio experience other than talking onto these mics.
00:00:35Marc:So I would, you know, mic their guitar, put the talking mic in their face and do it.
00:00:42Marc:And sometimes it was kind of amazing because I don't know what I'm doing.
00:00:46Marc:And the mix was very, very upfront, very present, very basic.
00:00:52Marc:And to see musicians lock into their game right in front of you this close, three feet away, is sort of astounding.
00:00:59Marc:So...
00:01:01Marc:A few years ago, for Record Store Day in 2019, actually, we released an exclusive vinyl record called The Garage, live music from WTF with Marc Maron, but we never got around to doing volume two.
00:01:11Marc:So instead, we're going to do the next volume right here for you.
00:01:14Marc:These are nine tracks from various points in the past 13 years, and we thought these ones go together nicely.
00:01:19Marc:I'll tell you what the tracks are right now, and they're also listed in the episode description, but then...
00:01:23Marc:That's all you're going to hear from me.
00:01:25Marc:We'll let this play like it's a continuous record.
00:01:28Marc:Okay, so here's what we've got.
00:01:29Marc:We've got Nick Lowe doing Sensitive Man, Amy Mann doing Labrador, James Mercer of The Shins doing Simple Song, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, The Ballad of Billy the Kid, which...
00:01:40Marc:I'd find astounding.
00:01:41Marc:That was done on a cigar box guitar.
00:01:43Marc:Langhorne Slim, song for Sid.
00:01:46Marc:Joseph Arthur, I miss the zoo.
00:01:48Marc:Blues Traveler, to hear that guy do the harp thing in front of you, wow.
00:01:52Marc:Blues Traveler, you don't have to love me.
00:01:54Marc:John Darnielle from Mountain Goats, you were cool.
00:01:58Marc:He's playing that.
00:01:59Marc:And to close things out, comedian Mary Mack recruits me to play one of her songs, Beautiful Brown Eyes.
00:02:05Marc:God, I barely remember that.
00:02:07Marc:We've been doing this a long time.
00:02:08Marc:But anyway, enjoy.
00:02:21Guest:Lately when I go to steal a kiss I feel you pulling away I know something is amiss But what it is you won't say
00:02:36Guest:If I've done something to upset you Believe me that was never my plan But how can I fix it standing out here in the cold I'm a sensitive man You don't always have to speak You can say it with a look
00:03:03Guest:Even across a crowded room I can read it like a book
00:03:10Guest:But other times when there's something on your mind Make it as plain as you can Don't freeze me, baby, I'm no dinky-doo I'm a sensitive man I'm a sensitive man You can hear that in my song I'm a sensitive man
00:03:35Guest:Well first impressions could steer you wrong
00:03:55Guest:Sincerely, my one desire is to make you happy again But I can't begin till you let me back in I'm a sensitive man I'm a sensitive man You can hear that in my song I'm a sensitive man
00:04:20Guest:My first impressions might well steer you wrong Sensitive man out in the cold Trying to do good but so misunderstood Sensitive man
00:05:07Guest:Daisy, you shouldn't do the things you do But you're just so incapable of changing Your lies so well I could never even tell What were facts in your artful rearranging But I came back for more
00:05:34Guest:And you laughed in my face, and you rubbed it in.
00:05:40Guest:I'm a libredor.
00:05:43Guest:And I'll run when the gun drops the dove again When we first met, I was glad to be a pet Like a lad I once had that we called Maisie But fetching sticks was the best I had for tricks You got bored, you got mad, and you got crazy
00:06:13Guest:And I came back for more
00:06:19Guest:And you laughed in my face and you rubbed it in Cause I'm a labrador And I'll run when the gun drops the dove again Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer Daisy, Daisy, do
00:06:47Guest:remember good old mazy house she waited out the stairs for you
00:07:06Guest:Daisy dear, I could almost shed a tear But let's shine in the time we have remaining You're a tough old gal, but a dog is just a pal And believe me my dear, I'm not complaining Cause I came back for more
00:07:34Guest:cause i knew even you did the best you could and i'm a labrador and with me you could see it was understood that i come back for more
00:08:06Guest:Well this is just a simple song To say what you done
00:08:26Guest:I told you about all those fears And away they did run You sure must be strong And you feel like an ocean made warm by the sun When I was just nine years old I swear that I dreamt
00:08:56Guest:Your face on a football field And a kiss that I kept under my vest Apart from everything but the heart in my chest I know that things can really get rough when you go it alone
00:09:26Guest:Don't go thinking you gotta be tough Play like a stone Could be there's nothing else in our lives So critical As this little home My life in an upturned boat Marooned on a cliff
00:09:55Guest:You brought me a great big flood And you gave me a lift Girl, what a gift You tell me with your tongue And your breath goes in my lungs And we float over the rift I know that things can really get rough When you go it alone
00:10:20Guest:So don't go thinking you gotta be tough Play like a stone It could be there's nothing else in our lives So critical As this little home
00:10:58Guest:Well this'll be a simple song To say what you done I told you about all those fears And the way they did run You sure must be strong
00:11:21Guest:And you feel like an ocean made warm by the sun Remember walking a mile to your house glow in the dark I made a fumbling play for your heart and the axe struck a spark
00:11:47Guest:You wore a charm and the chain that I stole Is special for you Love's such a delicate thing that we do With nothing to prove Which I never knew
00:12:36Guest:I got to retrench back to a favorite.
00:12:41Guest:What?
00:12:41Guest:It was originally heard from the hand of Ry Cooter.
00:12:47Guest:His was a mandolin version, but I think we can get through it.
00:12:53Guest:Mmm.
00:12:53Guest:Mmm.
00:12:53Guest:Mmm.
00:12:59Guest:I'll sing him the true song of Billy the Kid I'll sing him the reckoning deeds that he did Way out in New Mexico a long time ago When a man's best friend was his own 44
00:13:24Guest:Now when Billy the King was a very young lad In old Silver City he went to the bad Way out west with a knife in his hands At the age of 12 years he killed his first man Yeah
00:13:52Guest:A fair Mexican maidens play guitars and sing They sing the songs about Billy, their boy Bandit King Before this young manhood had reached his sad end He'd notched on his pistol for 21 years
00:14:21Guest:It was on one black night that poor Billy died.
00:14:27Guest:He said to his friends, I'm not satisfied.
00:14:31Guest:There's 21 men I've put bullets through and Sheriff Pat Garrett's gonna make 22.
00:14:43Guest:Yeah.
00:14:51Guest:Well this is how Billy the Kitty met his fate A big moon was shining as I was getting late Shot down by Patton Garrett, Silver City's best friend The poor outlaw's life has reached a sad end
00:15:20Guest:Yeah.
00:15:32Guest:Hey!
00:15:48Guest:As the earth stood still, Sid began to move.
00:16:01Guest:I understood the words he said.
00:16:04Guest:He understood mine too.
00:16:07Guest:I watched Sid suffer.
00:16:16Guest:I saw Sid strong.
00:16:19Guest:Tell me where do the great ones go when they're gone?
00:16:28Guest:He told me it would be alright To go and have fun He said he loved his family But it was time to run
00:16:59Guest:I love that old man.
00:17:05Guest:I wrote him this song.
00:17:08Guest:Tell me where do the great ones go when they're gone?
00:17:25Guest:I'm so glad I got to say goodbye When you run into Jack Sydney Tell him I said hi Don't you know I love those old men I pray the way they belong
00:17:54Guest:All hanging where the great ones go when they're gone
00:18:31Guest:Don't you know how I love that old man?
00:18:38Guest:I wrote him this song.
00:18:40Guest:Well, son, where do the great ones go when they're?
00:18:46Guest:Where do the great ones go when they're?

00:20:01Thank you.
00:20:16Guest:I miss the drunk, I miss the fiend, I miss the simplicity of addiction in the scene.
00:20:22Guest:I miss wandering aimlessly in half-dead sewers with rats for eyes, chewing on forgiveness and the will to apologize.
00:20:29Guest:I miss the return of no return as I burn an avalanches of white snow and yellow cocaine.
00:20:33Guest:I miss talking to brick walls while following the grain, and human dolls as I plagiarize myself like a dummy, except with counterfeit money for Cairo and black honey.
00:20:44Guest:I miss illusions begging to be chased Even as they disappear into me erased Until there is no one or nothing but the chase And a powdery ghost with no face of faith And the woman of my dreams Disappearing without grace I miss the zoo
00:21:07Guest:I miss the zoo I miss the zoo
00:21:24Guest:I miss evolving into a cloud of blue marijuana blown from the lips of hookers and pimps as they shake each other down in the alleys for the damned but mighty no one but the weak around and the beautiful unsightly I miss numb Neanderthals marching in rows of living dead from my wisdom teeth to Spain and back again in my head I miss salvation and syringes and angels of mercy and blooms of smoke numb and rain which drinks when thirsty I miss glasses full of spirits without tongue speak to me of Napoleon's wild nights
00:21:54Guest:I miss staying up for days and becoming a psychic Kretzel flying tights Shoot on by Zulu heading with toads to Mars A mysterious prison and one without bars At least those kind of bars
00:22:10Guest:I miss the zoo I miss the zoo I miss the zoo
00:22:33Guest:I'm just waking in the arms of strangers like puppies just born in the pound to a dead mother with eyes sealed shut looking for a tit to suck in other dangers when the night before laughter was our only pursuit even as knives carved up our backs and demons sat like buddhas eating fruit meditating on hate forever in our minds I miss exposing even my bones and the need that rewinds even my burning home even my gutted inner child even my dead grandfather beneath the ground is wild even my criminal
00:23:01Guest:Even my weed whacker thoughts, whipping a thin plastic string to cut the ears off others as I sing.
00:23:07Guest:I miss Van Gogh's revenge, I miss his nightly binge.
00:23:10Guest:I'm the spider surrounding my bed and lifting me as if an effigy or a dead king, a prophet of doom, a Jesus for the apocalypse wearing dirt like perfume, or a mother for Satan or a ghost for all the children of abuse.
00:23:21Guest:Take me into the fire, watch me burn like a goose As they sing in spider voices There goes creation, there goes the moon There goes the butterfly wanting a cocoon I miss being a bloom and a goon Waking up too soon in the afternoon I miss the zoo
00:23:48Guest:I miss the zoo I miss the zoo
00:24:14Guest:Do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-
00:24:30Guest:The ice caps are all melting, but you're still mad at me.
00:24:36Guest:And all your reservations will be washed upon the sand.
00:24:42Guest:And you don't have to love me, but tonight I'll be your man.
00:24:48Guest:Yeah, you don't have to love me, tonight I'll be your man.

00:25:28Guest:Yeah, you don't have to love me, tonight I'll be your man.
00:25:34Guest:You don't love me, you don't have to explain, if you don't want me.
00:25:43Guest:We'll just play this little game With everything that's going wrong Each day could be your last You don't have to love me You don't have to love me But tonight I'll be your man Oh yeah
00:26:40Guest:have to love me but tonight i'll be your man yeah you don't have to love me but tonight i'll be your man oh you don't have to love me

00:27:08Guest:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:28:10Guest:This is a song with the same four chords I use most of the time When I've got something on my mind And I don't want to squander the moment
00:28:40Guest:Trying to come up with a better way to say what I want to say People were mean to you But I always thought you were cool Clicking down the concrete hallways In your spiked heels Back in high school
00:29:17Guest:It's good to be young, but let's not kid ourselves.
00:29:20Guest:It's better to pass on through those years and come out the other side with our hearts still beating, having stared down demons, come back breathing.
00:29:32Guest:People were mean to you, but I always thought you were cool.
00:29:39Guest:clicking down the concrete hallways in your spiked heels back in high school you deserved better than you got someone's gotta say it sometime because it's true people should have told you you were awesome instead of taking advantage of you
00:30:04Guest:I hope you love your life now like I love mine I hope the painful memories only flex their power over you a little of the time We held on to hope of better days coming and when we did we were right I hope the people who did you wrong have trouble sleeping at night
