00:00:00Marc:I love that Mark, not a rollercoaster fan, right?
00:00:03Marc:And he said that, oh, you know, one of his exes was a rollercoaster fan.
00:00:07Marc:And I'm thinking, well, of course she loves rollercoasters.
00:00:11Marc:She married one.
00:00:12Marc:Doesn't every woman he date like rollercoasters?
00:00:15Marc:Like, I can't think of a person that would be described as a human rollercoaster more than Mark.
00:00:22Guest:Like, that is the ride.
00:00:41Marc:Hey, Chris.
00:00:42Marc:Hey, Brendan.
00:00:43Marc:What's going on?
00:00:44Marc:I went to the movies recently.
00:00:47Marc:You?
00:00:47Marc:Yeah, no.
00:00:49Marc:Shocker.
00:00:50Marc:Shocker to no one.
00:00:51Marc:But I saw a trailer that was in the same vein as Mark's show, Stick, where it was from the channel that brought you Ted Lasso.
00:01:04Marc:I saw a movie trailer.
00:01:07Marc:And it said, from the stars of Pitch Perfect.
00:01:12Marc:Oh.
00:01:13Marc:Have you ever...
00:01:15Marc:seen such just hey you like this movie these people are in it too what was the what was the movie it's called bride hard bride heart bride hard like walk hard oh okay and uh it has nothing to do with pitch perfect it just happens to star a lot of the people from pitch perfect but like not not not um in the universe
00:01:41Guest:But it's also, it's not Anna Kent.
00:01:44Guest:It's not like the star of Pitch Perfect.
00:01:46Marc:No, it's Rebel Wilson and just a bunch of other people.
00:01:50Marc:And it's bizarre.
00:01:52Marc:I've never seen from the stars of ever in a trailer.
00:01:57Marc:That must be a new low for me.
00:01:58Guest:Well, yeah.
00:01:59Guest:I mean, isn't it also like implied that if you know this person from that thing, you don't need to be reminded?
00:02:06Guest:Like, you know what?
00:02:07Guest:This is a weird thing.
00:02:08Guest:I wonder if it's this, dude.
00:02:10Guest:what rebel wilson has you know and this is just an objective statement i'm just observing what my eyes see she's undergone quite a bit of weight loss right she looks different than she looked in pitch perfect so you think i really wonder if that's what they're doing there that they're like uh maybe they don't know that that's fat amy
00:02:34Guest:I mean, that's, again, if anybody's never seen Pitch Perfect, her name in the movie is Fat Amy.
00:02:39Guest:Right.
00:02:40Guest:So I think that that could very well be the reason.
00:02:45Marc:Maybe.
00:02:46Marc:Maybe.
00:02:46Marc:But that is not giving the audience an ounce of credit.
00:02:51Guest:No.
00:02:52Guest:Where do you think we are?
00:02:53Guest:Right.
00:02:53Guest:They don't give anybody any credit because most people are pea brains.
00:02:57Guest:So they need to beat shit into their little skulls.
00:03:00Guest:Yeah.
00:03:01Marc:Yeah.
00:03:01Marc:Yeah.
00:03:02Marc:Oh, man.
00:03:02Marc:So, yeah, I saw that and I cracked up.
00:03:05Marc:So, yeah, I thought I'd share that with you.
00:03:07Guest:Well, I saw something and I thought of you.
00:03:09Guest:And it is the fact that the king is dead.
00:03:14Guest:Long live the king.
00:03:16Guest:George Coulomb, King George, from the HBO documentary Ren Faire, which we watched over a couple of episodes last year, has died at age 87 and
00:03:29Guest:Apparently, you know, going off to the afterlife filled with non-artificial breasts that he so desires.
00:03:38Marc:I mean, look, man, he's probably in hell with a bunch of fake boobs.
00:03:42Marc:Yeah, yeah.
00:03:43Marc:Only them.
00:03:44Guest:Yes.
00:03:44Guest:No, like I couldn't remember and I did not want to go back and rewatch it.
00:03:48Guest:But like, didn't he have like a set thing about how his life was going to end?
00:03:53Guest:Like he knew like to the day.
00:03:55Guest:Like I'm going to live this much more time.
00:03:57Guest:Like I really want to know like how far he overshot the target on that.
00:04:02Marc:Like three years, five years.
00:04:04Marc:What was the deal?
00:04:05Marc:Yeah.
00:04:05Marc:His prophecy.
00:04:06Marc:And also now I want to know what happens to the Ren Faire.
00:04:10Guest:Oh, it's finished.
00:04:12Guest:No, I shouldn't say it's finished.
00:04:14Guest:You know, we're going to talk a little bit later about like, you know, amusements and, and places that people go for, you know, their enjoyment and leisure and, and like that place, somebody will buy it and they, people go there forever.
00:04:26Guest:It just won't be that place anymore.
00:04:28Guest:It'll be a homogenized, whatever.
00:04:30Guest:And well, you know, people will go to it, but it's, it's not going to have that same kind of cult like community.
00:04:36Guest:Right.
00:04:37Marc:Yeah.
00:04:38Marc:And, uh, that's good because, um, you know, the cult like community is, um, always bad.
00:04:43Marc:It's always good for watching on a TV show, but I, I didn't think that anybody on that show was really coming out for the better.
00:04:50Marc:No, no.
00:04:51Marc:And like, honestly, they're free of this, this tyrant and, uh, I'm so happy for them.
00:04:59Marc:Seriously, like get off this earth.
00:05:02Guest:It's like, you know, we had that guest on Jeanette McCurdy who wrote that book.
00:05:06Guest:I'm glad my mom died or whatever it was like this.
00:05:09Guest:They should all write their own version of that.
00:05:11Guest:The people worked at the Ren Faire.
00:05:13Guest:Oh, thank God.
00:05:14Guest:King George is dead.
00:05:17Guest:Speaking of shows that we've talked about before, you know, we've spent a lot of time across multiple shows talking about New York City movies.
00:05:26Guest:And I think it became kind of so identifiable that you and I, you know, love movies set in New York.
00:05:33Guest:And, you know, we've had guests on on the main WTF to talk about that, that a couple of months ago, I got a listener reach out to me named Julian, who told me that he and two of his co-workers, they do a podcast is called Sleepless Cinematic Podcasts.
00:05:54Guest:And the title is because they record it after hours, the only time that they can when they're when they're done with work at this music school that they teach at.
00:06:03Guest:So usually like the recording start at like nine, 10 o'clock at night and it goes pretty late.
00:06:09Guest:We were there till like 1 a.m.
00:06:11Guest:And I say we because Julian invited me on the show knowing that I talk about New York movies so much.
00:06:18Guest:And they had a series, an episode in a series that they do on like below the line people that work in movies.
00:06:26Guest:And this was on the cinematographer Owen Roisman, who I think his most famous movie is The Exorcist in terms of movies that he shot.
00:06:35Guest:and uh but there's three very prominent new york movies that he uh that he's the dp on uh and that's the french connection taking of pelham one two three perfect and network so i went and had the pleasure of watching all three of those movies again because why like that's never a bad time any one of them if you said me go i'll go watch one of those i'd be like what a great assignment
00:06:59Guest:assignment but i uh i got to go watch all three over the course of a few months because they gave me enough heads up and uh and then we went and talked about it and that podcast just came out so i want to give a shout out to uh julian and his co-hosts madeline and amelio we had a great talk and if you want to check that out it's called sleepless cinematic podcast i'll put a link in the episode description and uh
00:07:25Guest:please give them some love.
00:07:26Guest:They, uh, they do a great show.
00:07:27Guest:They're a bunch of friends who decided to do kind of like what you and I do.
00:07:31Guest:We just like, Hey, this is fun when we talk about stuff.
00:07:34Guest:So let's, uh, let's put it to a recording and, uh, everybody else can enjoy it.
00:07:39Guest:And it, it does, it definitely seems like, uh, you know, a thing that's creating its own little community there.
00:07:44Guest:So congrats to them.
00:07:45Guest:And, uh, I really appreciate them having me on and anyone who listens to this, uh, please go enjoy.
00:07:51Guest:That's awesome.
00:07:52Marc:And so let me, let me, I got to ask the logistics.
00:07:55Marc:So does that mean that you were talking at like midnight about this movie or these series of movies and like, like Owen was just in the next room and Don was sleeping?
00:08:06Guest:I went to their, I went to their office and,
00:08:08Guest:I went to their location.
00:08:11Guest:They offered that to me.
00:08:12Guest:They said, hey, you know, we could do this remote if you don't want to come.
00:08:15Guest:I'm like, you don't live in North Dakota.
00:08:18Guest:You're in Manhattan.
00:08:19Guest:I'm going to come to your office.
00:08:22Marc:Oh, nice.
00:08:22Marc:So this, I don't think it was probably your first time, you know, talking in a podcast where you were in person, but like how did it feel to do it in person?
00:08:32Marc:Is it different?
00:08:33Guest:It just feels like, you know, sitting around with a group of people talking.
00:08:37Marc:I
00:08:37Guest:I don't have any, you know, kind of hangups about that.
00:08:41Guest:It's in, you know, it's on a microphone.
00:08:43Guest:We're just talking.
00:08:44Guest:Sure.
00:08:45Marc:Yeah.
00:08:45Guest:Yeah.
00:08:45Guest:All right.
00:08:46Guest:Cool.
00:08:47Guest:But yes, please go enjoy that.
00:08:49Guest:That was a good time for me.
00:08:52Guest:I think it would be a good time for you if you're listening to it.
00:08:54Marc:Wait, so are Don and Owen going to listen to this over the weekend?
00:08:59Marc:Oh, I don't know.
00:08:59Guest:I mean, I never push my shit on my family, to be clear.
00:09:02Marc:I mean, sure, you guys listen to Unspooled all the time, but probably not the Friday show.
00:09:07Guest:We listen to things that don't have me on it.
00:09:09Guest:Yeah.
00:09:09Marc:Right.
00:09:10Marc:So, I don't know.
00:09:11Marc:This is a film series that, you know, they'll kind of know of.
00:09:15Marc:Like, Owen's not old enough probably to watch, like, the French Connection.
00:09:18Guest:Three R-rated movies?
00:09:20Guest:No, he's not old enough to watch any of them.
00:09:22Guest:I mean, how old are you?
00:09:23Guest:Because he's such a fan of trains.
00:09:25Guest:Like, we literally just went to, at his request, went to the New York Transit Museum for his birthday.
00:09:30Guest:That's a banger of a museum.
00:09:31Guest:Yeah.
00:09:32Guest:And he loves trains.
00:09:34Guest:And I'm like, oh, man, taking the poem, it's so great.
00:09:37Guest:And he just, I can't get over the hump for it.
00:09:42Guest:There's too much in it that I know will bother him.
00:09:44Guest:So I'm like, he'll have to wait for that one.
00:09:46Marc:but it's great stick to money train that's uh that's owen's wheelhouse mama from the train yeah the train cinematic universe the murder on the orient express yeah wait what's that one not money train but the other the brad pitt one what's that called the brad pitt the bullet bullet train oh bullet train oh my gosh that was like one of my favorite movies of that year that was great that was fantastic
00:10:12Guest:I don't know.
00:10:12Guest:Are you allowed now that this is coming out on a Friday, right?
00:10:17Guest:Uh-huh.
00:10:19Guest:And I know you're not a critic.
00:10:22Guest:You're not registered with something.
00:10:24Guest:But you are no longer under embargo.
00:10:27Guest:That is true.
00:10:28Guest:After having seen The Final Reckoning, the last Mission Impossible movie.
00:10:34Guest:Do you want to...
00:10:36Guest:I don't know.
00:10:36Marc:Do you feel like you should say anything?
00:10:39Marc:I mean, it is.
00:10:40Marc:Look, I think everyone should probably go see it if they're inclined to.
00:10:44Marc:If you were on the fence and you were like, maybe I should, maybe I should.
00:10:49Marc:I would recommend probably not seeing it.
00:10:51Marc:It is a lackluster finale.
00:10:54Guest:I mean, I can't believe this in the sense that I can believe that it would be not good.
00:11:01Guest:I can't believe that it was so not good that you registered it as bad.
00:11:06Guest:Like I figured it was one of the, like we have a friend, his name is Matt and not Matt Singer, but another friend of ours who, um,
00:11:14Guest:He says he loves Star Wars so much that he has realized long ago he is an uncritical Star Wars fan.
00:11:25Guest:If it's the worst Star Wars movie, he will still go to it and enjoy it and leave and be like, I just watched Star Wars.
00:11:33Guest:It was great, even though it was Attack of the Clones or whatever.
00:11:38Guest:And he just doesn't think about it that way.
00:11:40Guest:And I know people that are like that with like, you know, whatever, James Bond.
00:11:43Guest:It's just like Star Trek.
00:11:45Guest:They're fans and they're like, I don't care about analyzing this too deeply.
00:11:51Guest:It brings me happiness.
00:11:52Guest:I love it.
00:11:53Guest:You love the Mission Impossible movies.
00:11:57Guest:Right.
00:11:57Guest:You love the bad one.
00:11:59Guest:You love the ones that people generally think are lackluster.
00:12:04Guest:You're like, no, they're still good.
00:12:05Guest:You're the same way with Superman.
00:12:07Guest:Like, I can't imagine you would go to this Superman coming out and be like, no bueno.
00:12:14Guest:You'll find something that makes you walk out and go, hey, Superman, man, it was great.
00:12:19Guest:Right?
00:12:20Guest:Yeah.
00:12:20Guest:You legit told me this Mission Impossible was bad.
00:12:24Marc:Yes.
00:12:25Marc:Yes.
00:12:25Marc:And look, I am a person who went to the Museum of Moving Image.
00:12:29Marc:I bought a membership to this place to go to the Mission Impossible exhibit that they have.
00:12:37Marc:And by the way, it's a fun exhibit.
00:12:39Marc:It has all the costumes, which I really enjoyed all of Tom Cruise's costumes.
00:12:44Marc:You get to see them all through the movies.
00:12:46Marc:And they're all on like a little pedestal.
00:12:49Marc:So you can tell that, oh, look, I'm probably as tall as Tom Cruise.
00:12:53Marc:Yeah.
00:12:54Marc:But it looks like he's taller than me because it's on a little lift there.
00:12:58Marc:So yeah, that was fun.
00:13:00Marc:And great exhibit.
00:13:02Marc:Get to see all the big stunts from all the movies and you get to see behind the scenes stuff.
00:13:07Marc:Really fun.
00:13:07Marc:Really like right in my Q zone.
00:13:10Marc:Yeah.
00:13:10Marc:This movie...
00:13:12Marc:That was so disappointing.
00:13:15Marc:That's crazy.
00:13:16Marc:I think back to it, and you got to remember, Brendan, this movie, they allegedly shot one right after the other, right?
00:13:25Marc:Yeah, but I think kind of not, right?
00:13:28Marc:Well, no, they did.
00:13:29Marc:Yeah, but there was a lot of start and stop.
00:13:32Marc:Well, so they said at the time that they were 90% done with the second movie, The Final Reckoning.
00:13:39Marc:And then- Can you get the gif?
00:13:42Marc:You sure about that?
00:13:44Marc:You sure about that?
00:13:44Marc:That's why?
00:13:45Marc:But Barbenheimer happened and just ate its lunch, right?
00:13:49Marc:So the movie like stunk at the box office.
00:13:52Guest:so and it was like a cliffhanger stunk cliffhanger like box office disappointment not a bomb or anything but it didn't make the money they wanted to make and you've got a cliffhanger that's guaranteeing a continuation of the story and you're you got to sell that now people didn't watch that to the level like you always assume you have a big seat you have a big movie the sequel especially if you have to watch the first one will have just if even if it's
00:14:19Marc:does great it's gonna have just less than the first one in terms of audience right this movie uh can i you know you just have to remember that there were two strikes that happened right so they they retooled most of the movie and
00:14:35Marc:And it happened during the writer's strike and during the actor's strike.
00:14:40Marc:So they had to, like, you know, put the stop and start.
00:14:43Marc:And you can see the seams on the screen.
00:14:46Marc:Like, the whole... If you were to go see this, you can just walk in 40 minutes after the movie starts.
00:14:53Marc:And...
00:14:53Marc:have not missed a single thing the movie has so many flashbacks to the last movie that you've seen and then later on in the movie there are flashbacks to the same movie that you're watching this seems like this is uh this is a paralysis by analysis like they overthought this like way too much like oh well what
00:15:15Guest:How do we continue this story if we didn't get as many people watching the last time?
00:15:19Guest:And now we'll get people in there with these new stunts, but they're not going to follow the story.
00:15:23Guest:And it's like, guy, nobody fucking cares.
00:15:27Guest:Like, did you ever go back and watch that diploma mission impossible?
00:15:31Guest:It's unintelligible.
00:15:33Guest:There's not a thing that makes sense, but it doesn't matter.
00:15:36Guest:You're like, yeah, knock list, go get it.
00:15:39Guest:Go come down from the ceiling and get the knock list.
00:15:41Guest:I don't know what it is, but you can do spider hanging and get it.
00:15:45Marc:Yeah.
00:15:46Marc:Yeah.
00:15:46Marc:This is like the movie franchise is built on these MacGuffins that don't actually matter, right?
00:15:53Marc:They're just a thing to, to, so that he can dangle from a building and this and that, right?
00:15:59Marc:What this movie presupposes is what if all of those MacGuffins actually mattered?
00:16:06Marc:So now they're all lore.
00:16:07Marc:Yeah.
00:16:07Marc:Yes.
00:16:08Marc:And I'm just like, what this movie could have been an email.
00:16:12Marc:Like it is, there's one stunt that is amazing, truthfully amazing.
00:16:18Marc:And it's him in the biplane and stuff, which is awesome and fun, but everything else is just them talking and not even like our, the main characters are never in the same room.
00:16:30Guest:This is giving me no time to die vibes for me, how you're explaining it.
00:16:36Guest:That's how that movie felt to me.
00:16:38Marc:Yeah, and they try to do a swerve with no time to die.
00:16:42Marc:And it's a thing.
00:16:44Marc:And there was just a lot of just like head scratching during the movie.
00:16:48Marc:And it is honestly a fun movie to just nitpick because it is a movie that's filled with holes.
00:16:56Marc:And yeah, so if you wanna do that and you like doing that,
00:16:59Marc:there's probably a better way for you to spend three hours.
00:17:04Marc:It's the longest Mission Impossible movie.
00:17:06Marc:It's three hours long, Brendan.
00:17:09Guest:Is this the one where, is this, during which side of production was it where Cruz lost his shit and somebody recorded him flipping out?
00:17:17Guest:Was that during the making of the first one?
00:17:19Marc:I think it was the first one.
00:17:20Marc:I think it was the first one.
00:17:21Marc:Yeah, yeah.
00:17:21Guest:Still seems like he was a little on edge.
00:17:23Marc:I mean, I don't blame him.
00:17:25Marc:You know, I saw him recently.
00:17:26Marc:He was talking about how he was trying to convince other studios to make movies.
00:17:31Marc:Like, hey, we're making our Mission Impossible movie.
00:17:34Marc:When's your movie coming out?
00:17:35Marc:Like, I hope you don't have this week because we're coming out this week.
00:17:38Marc:And like, meanwhile, they were never actually in production.
00:17:41Marc:So he was doing a little shell game himself.
00:17:43Marc:But, you know, God bless him.
00:17:46Marc:And he's trying.
00:17:47Marc:He's dangling off of a biplane.
00:17:49Marc:He's
00:17:49Marc:For some reason, people think it is exciting for him to be underwater in a fake submarine and find that compelling, but it's not.
00:17:58Marc:So I don't know.
00:17:59Marc:I have my problems with the last mission impossible.
00:18:03Guest:Man, Tom Cruise, when's he going to catch a break?
00:18:06Guest:Because what a hard luck guy.
00:18:10Marc:I think he'll land on his feet.
00:18:14Marc:I'm sure of it.
00:18:15Guest:Yeah.
00:18:16Guest:Well, that is disappointing.
00:18:17Guest:But it is Memorial Day weekend.
00:18:19Guest:You have a lot that you can go take, you know.
00:18:23Marc:Lilo and Stitch.
00:18:24Marc:Are you going to see Lilo and Stitch?
00:18:25Guest:I don't think so, no.
00:18:27Marc:No?
00:18:27Marc:Owen's not jonesing for some Lilo?
00:18:31Guest:You saying the words Lilo and Stitch is the first time I've heard it in my ears ever.
00:18:36Marc:Oh, yeah.
00:18:37Marc:It's a new live action Lilo and Stitch.
00:18:39Guest:I mean, like, I know what it is, but no person has said to me we should be seeing Lilo and Stitch.
00:18:45Guest:Not one.
00:18:46Guest:Including in my household.
00:18:48Marc:Memorial Day is like the start of summer.
00:18:50Marc:And I feel like summer blockbuster season is like the thing.
00:18:54Guest:it doesn't exist anymore though.
00:18:55Guest:Right.
00:18:56Guest:Like that's been, it's been long dead.
00:18:57Guest:They put Avengers end game out in April.
00:19:00Guest:So that's, you know, there's no more summer blockbuster season.
00:19:03Guest:I mean, they put big movies out in the summer, but it's not like when we were kids and it's like, Oh, it's Memorial day.
00:19:08Guest:This is the start.
00:19:10Guest:Like you're going to get your big movie right this weekend.
00:19:13Guest:Now it's like, yeah, that's a, that's a date for big movies to come out.
00:19:17Guest:But so is, you know, March 14th or whatever, you know?
00:19:21Guest:Yeah.
00:19:22Guest:Um,
00:19:22Guest:You know what I think I'm going to do, though?
00:19:24Guest:I'm not kidding about this.
00:19:26Guest:And I probably have an in.
00:19:28Guest:I could not have to pay for it.
00:19:29Guest:But I'm going to go pay for it.
00:19:30Guest:I'm going to go take myself down to the Barnes & Noble on 7th Avenue.
00:19:35Guest:And I'm going to buy Peter Wolfe's book.
00:19:39Guest:Yeah.
00:19:40Guest:Because I never really... Like, I'm like Mark in that I'm like...
00:19:47Guest:Well, I'm not going to read this guy's memoir ahead of time.
00:19:49Guest:I'm going to research it.
00:19:50Guest:But, you know, if it's a rock memoir, Rob Halford came on.
00:19:54Guest:It's like, well, I don't want to read the Rob Halford memoir.
00:19:57Guest:And then usually I'm sure for people who are fans, it works where they listen and they're like, oh, I got to go get that book.
00:20:04Guest:But like I listen to the interview and I'm usually like.
00:20:08Guest:Hey, that's all I need.
00:20:09Guest:Like Mark did a good job with that guy and I don't need any more.
00:20:13Guest:Like I'm not going to go read that rock memoir.
00:20:17Guest:This was the first one where I'm listening to this.
00:20:19Guest:I'm like, wait a minute.
00:20:20Guest:I want to know all of this stuff.
00:20:22Guest:And the way he's laying out this book that it's like these episodic events and all this, like these connections and that.
00:20:30Guest:And there's like, he's Gump.
00:20:31Guest:Yeah.
00:20:32Guest:And he's great.
00:20:33Guest:He's great at telling the stories like that Marilyn Monroe story.
00:20:35Guest:I'm like, I'm in, man.
00:20:36Guest:I'll go read this this weekend.
00:20:39Marc:Totally.
00:20:39Marc:What a guy.
00:20:41Marc:And what all these stories.
00:20:42Marc:Also, Marilyn Monroe eats good and plenty.
00:20:45Marc:Good Lord, woman.
00:20:46Marc:Like, that is not fun.
00:20:48Marc:But, I mean, just amazing, amazing stories that this guy has.
00:20:52Marc:He was married to Faye Donoway.
00:20:54Marc:Okay?
00:20:54Marc:Talk about, you know, you're talking about network.
00:20:57Marc:Yes.
00:20:57Marc:You know, you just saw her in it.
00:20:58Marc:Like, that is unbelievable that this guy...
00:21:02Guest:And at the time, like a top tier movie star.
00:21:06Guest:I was trying to think of like, what's the equivalent?
00:21:08Guest:I mean, like really nobody, cause we don't do that anymore.
00:21:11Guest:They don't have like a, a structure like that, but it was, it would have been like, you know, some ran, it's like Keith Urban marrying Nicole Kidman.
00:21:18Guest:Yeah.
00:21:19Marc:Yeah, totally.
00:21:20Marc:And I mean, just the stories that he would hang out at the kettle of fish, a bar that we've been to.
00:21:27Guest:I also never knew that that was like a Bob Dylan hangout.
00:21:33Marc:Me either.
00:21:34Marc:It gives me new respect for that new Green Bay bar.
00:21:37Marc:It's crazy to me.
00:21:38Guest:But I always, I wonder, was it always known as like a Midwesterner bar?
00:21:43Guest:Like, was that the deal?
00:21:44Guest:Is that why Bob Dylan was hanging out there?
00:21:46Guest:He's like, hey, this reminds me of where I come from.
00:21:49Marc:Do you think he was watching the Packers game?
00:21:54Guest:He was a Vikings fan.
00:21:57Guest:If he was watching it there, it was just a, just a shit on them.
00:22:01Marc:Yeah.
00:22:01Marc:Yeah.
00:22:02Marc:But like that, it was bizarre.
00:22:04Marc:And he has so many like connections to all of these artists and people, not even artists, just like he, he lived with David Lynch and David Lynch had to, had to change the locks because David Lynch changed the locks.
00:22:21Guest:Like, yeah,
00:22:23Guest:that's not how that story you would think would end you'd be like this guy I live with David he's so fucking weird I gotta get him out of my house they're in bunk beds they're in bunk beds like where's that movie do you think they talked up and down to each other like
00:22:40Marc:100% about their dreams.
00:22:43Marc:Imagine listening to David Lynch's dreams when he was just starting out.
00:22:47Marc:Oh, my God.
00:22:51Marc:I couldn't believe those stories.
00:22:52Marc:And yeah, you're right.
00:22:53Marc:I mean, and also, and I must admit, I've never heard of Peter Wolfe before in my entire life.
00:22:59Marc:And now I'm kind of obsessed with him.
00:23:00Guest:Well, it's funny.
00:23:02Guest:I, I didn't know.
00:23:03Guest:I mean, obviously it's like, I know what the, who the Jake Isles band is.
00:23:08Guest:I didn't know that he had this expansive life beyond that band.
00:23:14Guest:Like, it's like, to me, it would be like, just name any band for like the knack, you know, the guys who sing my Sharona, right?
00:23:23Guest:Yeah.
00:23:23Guest:I would have never known that a guy from that band had some like massively expansive life where he's connected to all these people, right?
00:23:32Guest:Bob Dylan and John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, right?
00:23:36Guest:Like all of that.
00:23:37Guest:So that's where the surprise was to me.
00:23:39Guest:It wasn't like I was like...
00:23:41Guest:why who's this guy why are we having him on i was like oh okay from yeah peter wolf from the jay gos band okay i guess that you know mark has done that before where he's like i love this band i want to talk to this guy but i didn't realize that it was going to be so um kind of labyrinthine to the point where it almost he's almost like the kid from almost famous
00:24:03Guest:Yes.
00:24:03Guest:Like, like that might, it might as well be his story is that he's just like, yeah, I just wound up hanging out with bands, you know, but at the same time he's an artist himself.
00:24:11Guest:So it's like got this extra layer.
00:24:14Marc:Yeah.
00:24:14Marc:And, and when Mark and Peter were just starting talking and he was like, yeah, I didn't want to talk about the J's J Giles band.
00:24:21Marc:I was like, well, what the fuck is this book going to be about?
00:24:23Marc:Like, if it's not going to talk about the band that he's famous for.
00:24:27Marc:And it turns out there he's, he's stealing wine off of Bob Dylan.
00:24:31Marc:Like, what is he he called a television station and got Bob Dylan on the phone.
00:24:38Marc:Yeah.
00:24:39Marc:Like what?
00:24:40Marc:And then like ran to his apartment that he was invited to.
00:24:43Marc:Like, what a what a crazy life this guy has led.
00:24:48Guest:i i uh i liked that he very clearly was extremely moved by the blurb that dylan gave him and and like it meant a lot to him but then also like that was that sold the book for me i'm like yes this bob dylan he's pretty good like
00:25:09Guest:He's got away with words.
00:25:11Guest:Like, I'm listening to that blurb and I'm like, wait, Eleanor Roosevelt.
00:25:17Guest:Like, I don't know.
00:25:17Guest:I got to get this book.
00:25:21Marc:Totally.
00:25:21Marc:Totally.
00:25:21Marc:You really put him over.
00:25:23Marc:Like, that's one of those things that just puts the book over, man.
00:25:27Marc:It is wild.
00:25:28Guest:Well, also, I thought of you in the fact that in his story about John Lee Hooker, John Lee Hooker is sitting there watching Lassie.
00:25:35Guest:I'm like, now I know two people that watch Lassie.
00:25:39Marc:Loved it, by the way.
00:25:41Marc:And yes, same.
00:25:42Marc:This Lassie's a smart motherfucker.
00:25:46Guest:Check out the big brain on Lassie.
00:25:50Guest:Well, good.
00:25:51Guest:Yeah, I'm glad you were as surprised by that one as I was.
00:25:54Guest:And I hope I hope the listeners were especially Chad.
00:25:58Marc:I hope Chad was listening to that and got a kick out of Mark's response to his email about the distracting Mark at the airport and potentially being the reason why he left his laptop at the airport.
00:26:13Guest:I love that Mark's at first like, is this a Canadian thing?
00:26:16Guest:It seems very Canadian to apologize to me for something you didn't do.
00:26:25Guest:I think Chad is off the hook no matter what, but I'm glad he wrote in.
00:26:32Guest:I think it was helpful to the story.
00:26:36Marc:Yeah.
00:26:37Marc:Also, how many sinks does Mark have in his kitchen?
00:26:40Marc:He's saying he got all these.
00:26:42Marc:Three sinks.
00:26:43Guest:I'm just realizing he has three sinks.
00:26:46Marc:Wow.
00:26:46Marc:What a fucking king of a castle.
00:26:48Marc:Like three fucking sinks.
00:26:51Marc:I'm a lowly peasant here with one sink in my kitchen.
00:26:56Marc:How does he have three sinks?
00:26:57Guest:He has.
00:26:59Guest:So, OK, this is the regular sink that's over there by the range.
00:27:03Guest:That's like the main sink.
00:27:04Marc:Yeah.
00:27:05Marc:The main sink.
00:27:06Marc:Okay.
00:27:06Guest:Yeah.
00:27:07Guest:I mean, that's like your, that's the one that you'd be like, there's the kitchen sink.
00:27:10Guest:It's right next to the stove.
00:27:12Guest:Right.
00:27:12Guest:So he's got an Island where he eats from, like in the kitchen.
00:27:17Guest:I have one of those too, but I don't have a sink in mine.
00:27:19Guest:His Island has a, has like a, a quick rinse sink in it.
00:27:24Guest:Like, you know, I, I, I don't necessarily know why it's used, but like maybe bar.
00:27:31Guest:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:27:32Guest:Or like if you're prepping food right there, which is kind of what looks like this island is mainly used for, you can rinse off a vegetable or whatever, you know.
00:27:42Guest:That's two sinks.
00:27:43Guest:What's the third sink?
00:27:44Guest:Then like off to the side in the kitchen, there is the sink that's... There's plumbing over there because there's a dishwasher...
00:27:55Guest:So over by where the dishwasher is, there is also a sink.
00:27:58Guest:It must've been whoever designed that kitchen was like, well, if I've got these, this kitchen stack over here, which, you know, if you, you know, from your own house, like you got those, that's the thing that goes all the way up and is like vented out of your roof.
00:28:13Guest:Yeah.
00:28:13Guest:Right.
00:28:14Guest:And so if they got that over there, why not put a sink?
00:28:17Guest:Right.
00:28:18Guest:So, so he's got a sink over there and I don't know.
00:28:22Guest:I think that's the one where the cats piss in.
00:28:25Guest:I'm not sure.
00:28:26Guest:Mark can correct me on that.
00:28:27Guest:I'll ask him at some point, but I'm pretty sure that's the one because that's the one I've definitely seen him dump his cat bowls in.
00:28:35Guest:So I bet the cats smell stuff in there that just makes them go like, well, this is my place.
00:28:41Guest:So I'll just take a piss in here.
00:28:43Guest:Right.
00:28:43Marc:Oh, man.
00:28:44Marc:And I got to say, when I first got my cats 10 or so years ago, Aaron, my wife, was trying to get them to pee in the toilet.
00:28:55Marc:And I was just like, good luck with that.
00:28:56Marc:I ain't doing anything like that.
00:29:00Marc:It never worked out.
00:29:01Marc:But Mark has a lovely cat who uses the toilet, a.k.a.
00:29:05Marc:sink.
00:29:06Marc:I mean, that's pretty amazing.
00:29:07Marc:That's terrible, though.
00:29:09Guest:I would have to move.
00:29:13Guest:Yeah.
00:29:14Guest:Can't live here anymore.
00:29:15Guest:It's got cat piss in the sink.
00:29:18Marc:Bad luck just smelling a thing like that.
00:29:20Guest:Oh, yeah.
00:29:21Guest:The cat we had years ago, he was so picky about the litter box that if it had one thing in it, he wouldn't use it.
00:29:32Guest:And he would piss off this.
00:29:34Guest:You know, you just sit next to it and piss.
00:29:37Guest:It would drive me so fucking crazy.
00:29:39Guest:Like I, like I would literally get like that.
00:29:41Guest:I'd be like, I'm not sure we can live here anymore.
00:29:43Guest:Like this smells, I don't like it.
00:29:46Guest:There was, when we lived in another apartment, uh, we kept the, there was a, the, the, the bathroom had a shower and a tub.
00:29:55Guest:So we kept the, uh,
00:29:57Guest:you know, it's like a standup shower and then a separate tub.
00:30:00Guest:The tub was old and we didn't like it.
00:30:02Guest:So we didn't use it.
00:30:03Guest:We just used the shower.
00:30:04Guest:So we kept the litter box in the tub.
00:30:07Guest:Yeah.
00:30:08Guest:Well, he would go in there and piss in the tub.
00:30:11Guest:Like, and so you'd,
00:30:12Guest:like constantly walk in the bathroom and be like, oh, it stinks in here.
00:30:16Guest:And it's because then it's just like kind of slowly going down the drain.
00:30:20Guest:It's in there, right?
00:30:23Guest:So we got three litter boxes
00:30:27Guest:Basically, I shouldn't have even gotten a litter box.
00:30:30Guest:I should have just put a liner in the tub and filled the tub with litter.
00:30:34Guest:But instead, we got three litter pans and made them so there was no space to walk in the tub.
00:30:41Guest:And then he just had to piss directly in the box.
00:30:44Guest:And that worked.
00:30:45Guest:But then once we moved and had the box out in the open, he was just back to going right next to it.
00:30:50Guest:And it was like, again, we would, oh no, is he's pissing out of the box?
00:30:54Guest:Is he sick?
00:30:55Guest:Does he have this or that?
00:30:56Guest:He's fine.
00:30:58Guest:Nope.
00:30:58Guest:He's just picky.
00:30:59Guest:He doesn't like that you didn't clean the litter box right away.
00:31:02Marc:That's bananas.
00:31:03Marc:What a, what a princess of a cat.
00:31:06Marc:Yeah.
00:31:07Marc:Jeez Louise.
00:31:08Marc:Oh yeah.
00:31:10Marc:Also this week, love the mixtape.
00:31:13Marc:That was super fun.
00:31:14Marc:Also, I recommend if you haven't listened to it,
00:31:16Marc:Listen to it while driving, because it is a fun drive.
00:31:20Guest:I do that myself.
00:31:22Guest:After I make those, I put them on in the car, mostly just to see that they hold together differently than me sitting and listening and editing it.
00:31:31Guest:I want to see...
00:31:31Guest:is this the kind of thing you could just put on and have a go?
00:31:34Guest:And, and yeah, it definitely works.
00:31:36Marc:Yeah.
00:31:36Marc:I loved the, uh, the mess up of the fuck up as, uh, Mark, uh, Macaulay says, uh, in the Fiddler and apologize for saying his name.
00:31:44Marc:Right.
00:31:45Marc:Um, they loved that.
00:31:46Marc:And, uh, did you keep that in originally?
00:31:48Marc:Like, yeah.
00:31:49Marc:Okay.
00:31:50Marc:And, uh, tenacious D was just had me, you know, slapping my knee.
00:31:55Marc:It was great.
00:31:56Marc:Like, Hey, all right, Mark, what's your favorite tenacious D song?
00:31:59Guest:Hilarious.
00:32:00Guest:You don't know one, do you?
00:32:04Marc:Name one.
00:32:07Guest:Also, I want to note, he did not.
00:32:09Marc:No, he did not.
00:32:14Marc:Just hilarious.
00:32:17Marc:Oh, man.
00:32:18Marc:I don't know if I told you, I saw Tenacious D open up for Weezer back in the day.
00:32:22Guest:I saw the same.
00:32:23Marc:Did you?
00:32:24Guest:Yeah, I went to Baltimore to see them open for Weezer and Jimmy Eat World open for them.
00:32:32Guest:That was the three.
00:32:33Marc:What a concert.
00:32:34Marc:And they can bring it.
00:32:37Marc:I mean, I understand they don't do that anymore.
00:32:41Marc:Yeah.
00:32:41Marc:But yeah, that was a fun concert experience.
00:32:44Guest:Yeah.
00:32:44Guest:Oh, man, I loved, you know, when they were, I think what had happened was I saw them, you know, I used to watch Mr. Show.
00:32:51Guest:So that was where I first got my exposure to them.
00:32:53Guest:And then I had a friend of ours, Kevin, he went to see them at town hall.
00:33:00Guest:This was like around like 2001, right before their first album came out.
00:33:04Guest:His brother took him to see it at town, them at town hall.
00:33:08Guest:And he just wouldn't shut up about it.
00:33:09Guest:He was like, it was the greatest like ever.
00:33:12Guest:So like I, I started like, Oh, you just mean Jack Black, like that actor who's, you know, they, the thing they used to do on Mr. Show, they're like doing that for real now.
00:33:22Guest:Yeah.
00:33:22Guest:And I was obsessed with it before the album even came out.
00:33:25Guest:I had been watching all these live performances that they've been doing.
00:33:29Guest:I think I just really got into the fact that I couldn't believe that Kyle was such a great guitarist.
00:33:35Guest:I was like, oh my God, they're a real band.
00:33:38Guest:It's not just a comedy thing.
00:33:39Guest:And so, yeah, I was so psyched when that album came out and they toured for it that the closest one I could get to was in Baltimore.
00:33:48Marc:So I drove down to it.
00:33:49Guest:awesome awesome yeah i i saw them where the supersonics used to play uh in no way yeah yeah that was that was pretty cool like that was probably around the same time in uh you know 2001 that's or maybe 2000 no it's definitely 2001 because yeah the album came out 2001 it could have even been 2002 like it was into that year yeah i remember going to see them at a in-store performance at the virgin megastore
00:34:15Guest:No way.
00:34:16Guest:Yes.
00:34:17Marc:Wow.
00:34:17Marc:In Times Square, that one?
00:34:19Marc:No, no.
00:34:19Guest:The one at Union Square.
00:34:21Marc:Oh, Union Square.
00:34:22Marc:That's a good one.
00:34:24Marc:Shit.
00:34:24Marc:Man, I miss record stores.
00:34:25Marc:Remember the Tower Records over on like- Of course.
00:34:28Marc:Yeah, man.
00:34:28Guest:They had those playing stations.
00:34:31Marc:Yes.
00:34:31Guest:You spend all day there.
00:34:33Guest:Just go put the headphones on and listen to the music.
00:34:36Marc:Hours.
00:34:36Marc:I used to listen to like the No Doubt album, like a whole bunch.
00:34:39Marc:And like, yeah, that was so fucking fun, man.
00:34:42Marc:To be a kid when we were kids was dope.
00:34:44Guest:Do you know the backstory of that Tower Records and who owned the building?
00:34:52Marc:No.
00:34:52Marc:It was Trump.
00:34:54Guest:And those listening stations...
00:34:59Guest:went away after a while.
00:35:01Guest:And the reason they went away was because, this is such a Trump thing, that when he found out, so the way that that thing worked, and I heard this from somebody who was in the record business, and they said that you would...
00:35:19Guest:It was almost like MTV level jockeying to be a part of it.
00:35:25Guest:Like how bands just wanted to get their videos on MTV.
00:35:30Guest:Bands also worked really hard to try to get featured in the listening stations at Tower Records.
00:35:37Guest:Because it not only exposed them to audiences and boosted their sales, they would get money for...
00:35:46Guest:the amount of plays it's like, it would be, it was considered like being on the radio, right?
00:35:52Guest:You had a licensing fee to be in the listening station and you got a cut of however much was played while that, you know, during that week.
00:36:02Guest:Right.
00:36:03Guest:Okay.
00:36:04Guest:Trump found out about that.
00:36:06Guest:And he demanded a cut of the cut.
00:36:10Guest:He was like, if it's making money in my building, I want part of it.
00:36:16Guest:And like these people were making like a hundred dollars.
00:36:20Marc:Right.
00:36:20Marc:I was going to say, how much could that have possible?
00:36:22Guest:possibly with such penny ante bullshit but that is so indicative you know and so guess what happened they took the things out because they were like well we don't want to get an illegal quagmire with donald trump so no more listening stations
00:36:39Marc:That's why we can't have nice things.
00:36:41Marc:Forever.
00:36:43Marc:For real.
00:36:44Marc:And forever.
00:36:45Marc:Man, that sucks.
00:36:50Marc:Did you ever watch that Colin Hanks documentary about Tower Records?
00:36:53Marc:I haven't.
00:36:53Guest:I haven't.
00:36:54Guest:I haven't watched it.
00:36:55Guest:Maybe I should give it a try.
00:36:56Marc:I haven't watched it, and I believe I supported it in the Kickstarter.
00:37:01Marc:Oh, really?
00:37:01Marc:I think my name is in the credits as being a supporter of that movie.
00:37:06Marc:I still have not seen it.
00:37:07Marc:I should check that out.
00:37:08Guest:Oh, wow.
00:37:09Guest:Yeah.
00:37:10Guest:Is that the only time your name is in the credits of something?
00:37:13Marc:Possibly.
00:37:14Marc:Yeah.
00:37:15Marc:It wasn't the American, you know, you know, the air America documentary.
00:37:18Marc:I, I told them, no, like I did not sign off on my, uh, on my, you know, them using my name.
00:37:25Guest:What did you have an outstanding warrant?
00:37:27Marc:I, I, I remember when the checks were bouncing that and like, I was like upset and like, I think they got me like crying.
00:37:36Marc:And like, I think I was like, no, I don't, don't, don't use my footage.
00:37:40Guest:Oh, like you, you were like the, you didn't like what they had shot of you.
00:37:45Guest:Well, I mean, I didn't, I never saw it, but like I was just like, you, you, you, that's fair to just be like, nah, I, I, I don't want that in there.
00:37:53Marc:But I do wonder, cause I, I did see the filmmaker again and she's like, ah, I wish I could have used some of your stuff.
00:37:59Marc:And I was like, ah, man, what could have been, I could have been.
00:38:02Guest:You would have cut me from them.
00:38:03Guest:You would bump me from the movie.
00:38:05Guest:Cause I was like the voice of outrage.
00:38:07Marc:Maybe you you have always been so well, you know, eloquent.
00:38:13Marc:But you cursing in that documentary was such a chef's kiss of a moment.
00:38:18Guest:But the funny thing about that is that they shot it and put it in there to make me look like, you know, I'm an angry, outraged guy at the result of this election.
00:38:28Guest:And I was doing it was classic comedy.
00:38:31Guest:you know a distillation of my job i was performing for mark you know i was like trying to get him to see how to get this on the mics right like get people you fucking pissed man you know like that was that was to him uh so you know it's funny that that's the isolated out of context it's like oh that guy's pissed off it's like nope he's doing his job yeah
00:38:58Marc:I remember so vividly, your beautiful wife, Dawn, we watched the movie and she was like, man, it's so funny.
00:39:05Marc:It's like, Brendan never curses.
00:39:07Marc:And I'm like, what?
00:39:09Marc:Like, who are, do you know the person that you are sharing your home with?
00:39:16Guest:I don't even understand how she could even say that.
00:39:18Marc:I know.
00:39:19Marc:It was shocking to me.
00:39:23Marc:He's so well-tempered.
00:39:24Guest:I don't think she would say that anymore that I never curse.
00:39:27Guest:Listening to this show.
00:39:29Marc:Times are a change.
00:39:30Marc:By the way, for the Peter Wolf episode, there is a Sonic playlist that I made.
00:39:35Marc:Oh, look at you.
00:39:36Marc:There's like four hours of music and super fun.
00:39:39Marc:You know, his one album, Lights Out, that album Lights Out, not available for streaming.
00:39:45Marc:So that's not on there.
00:39:46Marc:But everything else is.
00:39:47Guest:That's weird.
00:39:48Marc:Well, I found a karaoke version.
00:39:51Marc:So I put that on there.
00:39:52Guest:Oh, so it's complete.
00:39:55Marc:Yes.
00:39:55Marc:Also, we got to talk about Sarah Silverman.
00:39:58Marc:Sarah Silverman, what a great hang.
00:40:00Guest:Well, I mean, it's one of those things where it's like he's literally known her since she's a teenager.
00:40:06Guest:She was like 19 the first time you ever saw her perform.
00:40:10Marc:Yeah.
00:40:10Marc:I love that Mark isn't sure he ever dated Sarah.
00:40:13Marc:Like, he's not that old that he would forget if he ever dated, you know, someone.
00:40:19Marc:But he dated her roommate.
00:40:22Marc:So that was something.
00:40:23Marc:I really love their chat.
00:40:24Marc:And just two people talking about stuff, talking about how that Roots show is just lying to every Jew.
00:40:32Guest:This is the furthest back.
00:40:34Guest:We are the oldest Jew in the family we've ever seen.
00:40:38Marc:He does every time somehow.
00:40:42Guest:It's like that guy in the White Lotus who tells every woman that she's younger than her age.
00:40:48Marc:Yes, 100%.
00:40:49Marc:And Mark went on a roller coaster.
00:40:54Guest:I mean, so I'll set this up by saying I knew this before he spoke about it on the on the on the intro.
00:41:04Guest:I knew about it before he put it in his newsletter, because just on Sunday afternoon, minding my own business, I get a text.
00:41:16Guest:That's just a video.
00:41:18Guest:clearly shot by Sam Rockwell holding the camera.
00:41:22Guest:And I don't know who they must've been sending it to someone else.
00:41:25Guest:Cause I think they keep talking about Mikey and it's Sam Rockwell, Mark and Natasha Leon, who are three people who have never been in my kitchen.
00:41:37Guest:And they, it's not true.
00:41:39Guest:Mark has been in my kitchen.
00:41:40Guest:Uh,
00:41:41Guest:But anyway, what a trio.
00:41:44Guest:Not only a trio just out there in the world, but a trio to put on a roller coaster.
00:41:50Guest:Yes.
00:41:50Guest:And all I see in this video is them going, we're going on the mummy.
00:41:54Guest:Hey, the mummy.
00:41:55Guest:And Rockwell's all like jazzed.
00:41:59Guest:Natasha, she's having fun.
00:42:01Guest:And you can see on Mark's face, he is not sure.
00:42:07Guest:We got this guy, not sure.
00:42:09Guest:That's all I thought of looking at him.
00:42:11Guest:And then he talks about it, how it was, you know, did whatever to him.
00:42:17Guest:He wasn't prepared for it.
00:42:18Guest:And I got to say, a lot of things about, you know, that came into mind about this choice of going on The Mummy.
00:42:27Guest:One...
00:42:28Guest:it told me that Rockwell knows what he's doing.
00:42:31Guest:Why?
00:42:32Guest:That, well, if that was his idea, we got to go on a ride and we're going to go on the mummy.
00:42:36Guest:And he seemed super excited to go on the mummy, like smart choice because at that park, there's a lot more state of the art rides.
00:42:46Guest:There's the Harry Potter rides.
00:42:48Guest:Yeah.
00:42:48Guest:Yeah.
00:42:48Guest:yeah mummy to go on the mummy is is wise that means you know which rides will actually give you the bang for your buck with the thrill that you're looking for because it's not the case with all those rides uh i will actually i will get back to that in a second because i have more to say about that but the other thing it told me is that mark is a coaster wimp
00:43:15Guest:Like, it's not just that, like, he can't handle massive crazy coasters.
00:43:20Guest:The mummy is pretty tame.
00:43:22Marc:Is it?
00:43:23Marc:I was wondering about that because he talks about the cyclone and that fucks up his- It is not the cyclone.
00:43:29Marc:No?
00:43:29Marc:Okay.
00:43:29Marc:Not even in the slightest.
00:43:31Marc:Because I've been on the cyclone a whole lot in my life.
00:43:34Marc:And I must say the last time I was on, I was like, I'm pretty sure that it hurt me way more than it should have.
00:43:39Marc:Yes.
00:43:40Guest:You have to, to not get hurt on the cyclone, you have to get on it.
00:43:46Guest:No way.
00:43:46Guest:Like it's like, it's like being in a boxing match.
00:43:50Guest:Like you, like you can put the headgear race.
00:43:53Guest:You can put the headgear on and everything.
00:43:55Guest:You just need to know.
00:43:57Guest:What do I do?
00:43:58Guest:Like if I'm going to absorb a blow, how do I do that?
00:44:01Guest:So I don't get hurt.
00:44:03Guest:So you have to go on the cyclone with a plan.
00:44:05Guest:And, and you can, I did it last year and I was okay.
00:44:10Guest:And I don't have a great back anymore.
00:44:12Guest:uh, at this point in my life.
00:44:14Guest:And so I was a little concerned.
00:44:15Guest:Am I going to get messed up on this?
00:44:17Guest:Is this a dumb idea?
00:44:18Guest:Which probably was a dumb idea, but it's still, I was able to do it and not get hurt.
00:44:22Guest:And I went on with Owen and, and didn't, he didn't get hurt.
00:44:25Guest:And the funny thing was we just had a friend in town and he was taking his daughter over to the cyclone.
00:44:31Guest:And, uh, I was like, Owen, you want to tell me anything about, uh, going on the cyclone?
00:44:36Guest:And he was like, tell Mike, he's got to put his arm around her head or she's going to hurt her neck.
00:44:41Guest:Um,
00:44:41Guest:Like he had this whole plan set.
00:44:44Guest:Like he knew like, no, no, no.
00:44:46Guest:And I was like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:44:47Guest:Kind of like, you know, use your, use your, your arm as like a neck pillow for her.
00:44:52Guest:So it doesn't whip her neck around.
00:44:55Marc:Good Lord.
00:44:56Marc:Didn't Mike take Owen's suggestion?
00:44:59Guest:He could not because she was too short for the ride.
00:45:04Marc:Yeah.
00:45:04Marc:I'm shocked, shocked that they cared.
00:45:06Guest:They really do.
00:45:08Guest:They're very diligent about it.
00:45:10Guest:I guess it's, you know, lawsuit city.
00:45:13Marc:If not, I guess so.
00:45:14Marc:Yeah.
00:45:14Marc:Yeah.
00:45:15Marc:Wow.
00:45:15Guest:Crazy.
00:45:16Guest:Yeah.
00:45:16Guest:I mean, the psych.
00:45:17Guest:So yes, back to the mummy.
00:45:19Guest:The mummy is not the cyclone.
00:45:21Guest:The mummy is fantastic.
00:45:24Guest:a at the closest comparison is space mountain but space mountain is much longer right there's much more uh coaster track to space mountain in the dark the mummy is uh a coaster a kind of like
00:45:41Guest:prelim coaster that brings you through the tombs and whatever and then you go into the darkness and spiral around and do the space mountain thing but for like about a third of the length of time as space mountain all right it sounds like skull mountain from great six flags great adventure okay
00:46:00Guest:Not familiar with that one, but okay.
00:46:02Guest:Yeah.
00:46:04Guest:I mean, it's a dark coaster.
00:46:05Guest:Dark coasters are... You have them at a carnival.
00:46:08Guest:Yeah.
00:46:09Marc:I don't love them.
00:46:10Marc:They're not my favorite coasters, honestly.
00:46:12Guest:But I'll tell you, the Mummy's really great because they... Okay, so here's another thing about this.
00:46:18Guest:Like...
00:46:19Guest:The Mummy is a kind of perfect integration of coaster and theme park attraction.
00:46:28Guest:How so?
00:46:30Guest:Well, because it's a coaster.
00:46:32Guest:It's like I say, there's a standard format for that type of coaster, dark ride coaster.
00:46:38Mm-hmm.
00:46:39Guest:But it's themed to this movie, right?
00:46:41Guest:The old mummy, the mummy with Brendan Fraser.
00:46:44Guest:And so there's a lot of cool, like, you know, special effects that you expect in a theme park, but still integrated into the coaster.
00:46:53Guest:Like you're riding on the track and you go through like a tomb area and all these like scarab beetles are on the wall chasing you.
00:47:01Guest:And then you got to zoom out of there and then, you know, down through some area where there's flames and fire and whatever.
00:47:07Guest:So that's all really great.
00:47:09Guest:And it made me realize, and I'll, you know, kind of put it to you in terms of, while I'm talking about this, you think about like rides, like what you think of rides.
00:47:18Guest:I think, I've loved rides my whole life.
00:47:20Guest:I'm a, I'm a coaster, it was a coaster kid.
00:47:22Guest:Like I like going on coasters, never been afraid of rides.
00:47:26Guest:And
00:47:27Guest:I got to a point in life where like, I wanted to go to coaster parks, right?
00:47:31Guest:Like go to the parks that are like predominantly feature coasters.
00:47:35Guest:Six Flags, a good example.
00:47:36Guest:The one that's here in this area, the New York, the New Jersey one is, it's a coaster park.
00:47:43Guest:There's one out in California, Six Flags.
00:47:46Guest:I don't know if it's still there, but it was called, what the fuck is the name of that?
00:47:51Marc:That's the one that Step by Step's intro was.
00:47:54Marc:And Entourage.
00:47:57Guest:It was Six Flags Magic Mountain.
00:47:59Guest:Magic Mountain.
00:47:59Guest:Six Flags Magic Mountain.
00:48:01Guest:That's right.
00:48:02Guest:In Valencia, California.
00:48:03Guest:It's about an hour north of LA.
00:48:06Guest:And that one had just amazing coasters.
00:48:10Guest:But I'll tell you what.
00:48:11Guest:There was a coaster there.
00:48:12Guest:I'm not even sure it's still there.
00:48:13Guest:I think they modified it.
00:48:16Guest:A bit.
00:48:17Guest:They're a great coaster.
00:48:17Guest:They're called the Goliath that for a while was like the record highest coaster drop, whatever.
00:48:22Guest:That's another good example of like, okay, so I did that.
00:48:26Guest:The highest coaster drop.
00:48:28Guest:Then I did a ride.
00:48:29Guest:They're called the X, the X coaster.
00:48:32Guest:And,
00:48:32Guest:And the idea of the X coaster was you sat in chairs, not unlike your beloved AMC Rick Miners.
00:48:40Guest:Okay.
00:48:41Guest:And they're strapped into that.
00:48:43Guest:And you start going up the track backwards.
00:48:45Guest:The track is backwards.
00:48:47Guest:Yes.
00:48:48Guest:The track is next to your chairs.
00:48:50Guest:Right.
00:48:50Guest:So your chairs are like picture like a bolt coming off each side of the track.
00:48:55Guest:And on each of those bolts are two easy chairs kind of just hanging.
00:48:59Guest:Right.
00:49:00Guest:And you're going up backwards.
00:49:02Guest:Right.
00:49:03Guest:So then it gets to the top of the peak.
00:49:06Right.
00:49:06Guest:And goes over.
00:49:07Guest:So you, in your chair, that is on this bolt, go ass over tea kettle.
00:49:14Marc:Get the fuck out of here.
00:49:15Guest:So that now your feet go up in the air, you flip over, and now as the thing is what a normal coaster does, go down, you are going down like...
00:49:26Guest:face first like you're free falling like exactly exactly how and then it swoops you up and you feel like it's exhilarating i'm flying is crazy right awesome that basically ruined coasters for me because you'll never again like yeah like like what is what more can you do yeah that was the craziest shit i've ever done yeah now now i just went back to the ride that they told me was the highest coaster drop in the world and i'm like
00:49:53Guest:But I was just on the easy chair that flipped me over and I thought I was going to die.
00:49:57Guest:Like, how, how does this compare?
00:50:01Guest:And so, you know, and it's the same thing.
00:50:03Guest:Like you can like this, like if you've been on the cyclone, which we were just talking about, we have a million times.
00:50:09Guest:It's like, that's the simple version of that X thing.
00:50:13Guest:It's like you go on that cyclone and it's this, Mark was even talking about it on, on the other day.
00:50:18Guest:It's this tight cyclone.
00:50:19Guest:very compact coaster, but there's a lot of track.
00:50:23Guest:So it just keeps going.
00:50:24Guest:You're like, how is this still going?
00:50:26Guest:And it's cause it's like turning in on itself, right?
00:50:29Guest:There's like track within the track and it's just whipping you around.
00:50:33Guest:It's so fucking fast and it's rickety and it just, you think you,
00:50:36Guest:could die that's part of the like experience of it you're like this seems dangerous like oh my god like it's controlled chaos and it's just very hard for me to go on another like regular coaster i'm like i got the cyclone you know a 20 minute subway ride away from me door to door so back to the mummy
00:50:59Guest:It's like they have certain rides in amusement parks, and The Mummy is the good version of this at the Universal one.
00:51:07Guest:But Disney's got great versions of this too, where they take the traditions of these rides and keep those intact because that's what you want.
00:51:17Guest:You want the traditional thrill you get from the ride.
00:51:21Guest:And then the stuff that's additive, it's like it's their...
00:51:25Guest:as a bonus.
00:51:27Guest:It's not taking away from that traditional thing.
00:51:30Guest:And Universal, my problem with Universal in general is that the coasters are all the modern ones, all the ones they keep adding.
00:51:38Guest:They just today are opening this new park, right?
00:51:41Guest:I'll have to find out about some of these coasters because I wonder, are they all going in this direction?
00:51:46Guest:The last time I went there, those Harry Potter rides, they're amazing.
00:51:49Guest:They're state-of-the-art rides.
00:51:51Guest:But...
00:51:52Guest:They're like mixed with these 3D screens.
00:51:56Guest:You have glasses on.
00:51:57Guest:The holograms, they come onto your coaster car and throw fireballs at you and stuff.
00:52:06Guest:It's Voldemort and it overwhelms the ride.
00:52:09Guest:And I'm like, I'm on a coaster.
00:52:11Guest:Just let me be on here.
00:52:14Guest:And I realized like the last time I went to Disney World,
00:52:18Guest:The great rides still were great.
00:52:21Guest:Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain.
00:52:25Guest:They all killed.
00:52:26Guest:And it wasn't just like a nostalgia thing because I went on plenty of things there that had gone on when I was a kid.
00:52:31Guest:Peter Pan and Small World.
00:52:33Guest:And then I was like, I think that's the last time for these, man.
00:52:38Guest:The pixie dust has worn off on this stuff.
00:52:41Guest:But the ones that are classic...
00:52:44Guest:in the form remain that.
00:52:47Guest:And the newer rides that are true to the concepts of those old rides, those were the best ones.
00:52:55Guest:So like people talk about this one at the new Star Wars area, the Rise of the Resistance.
00:52:59Marc:They say it's the best ever.
00:53:01Guest:it's great and it's basically the haunted mansion but just with crazy new star wars lore right you but you you know it's like the the upgrades to it are amazing you're no longer on a track it's like a system that is magnets under the ground so you don't see any track on the ground you just look like you're you look like you're one of those uh transport robots you know that dirt dirt dirt
00:53:25Guest:like, you know, just kind of floating around, but the tracks underneath you, you can't see it.
00:53:31Guest:It's just like, how's that any different though than the haunted mansion, which brings you on a track through the spooky house, right?
00:53:37Guest:This, you're just on the track going through the, the bad guy spaceship and then like, Oh no, they're shooting at us.
00:53:43Guest:Right.
00:53:43Guest:So it's the same concept and,
00:53:46Guest:And that registers in your brain.
00:53:48Guest:This is familiar to me, but modern, right?
00:53:51Guest:Yeah.
00:53:52Guest:The same thing with the guardians of the galaxy has a new coaster.
00:53:55Guest:That coaster is like the mummy.
00:53:56Guest:It's a dark ride.
00:53:57Guest:It's like space mountain.
00:53:59Guest:You're in a dark coaster.
00:54:00Guest:It does cool new things.
00:54:01Guest:Like you're, you're in these two, two cars.
00:54:04Guest:Like let's say you go on with the family, right.
00:54:06Guest:And you're sitting next to each other.
00:54:08Guest:Yeah.
00:54:08Guest:Because it goes in the dark, but everything's got like black light.
00:54:11Guest:So you still see your family and the track and whatever.
00:54:15Guest:Yeah.
00:54:15Guest:all of a sudden they, you, you, you guys split and you don't realize that the track has split.
00:54:19Guest:It just looks like your two cars are just floating away in space as you're going on this very fast track.
00:54:26Guest:It's a cool effect, but that's an effect that works with the coaster.
00:54:30Guest:It's not because I put 3d glasses on, like with the, and I'm now looking at the whomping willows that look like they're reaching out at me.
00:54:38Guest:Right.
00:54:38Guest:Yeah.
00:54:38Guest:Like they should be integrated into the ride.
00:54:41Guest:And like,
00:54:42Guest:That's the best part of it.
00:54:43Guest:And so all of this is to say, like, I think Sam Rockwell is on his ride game.
00:54:50Guest:Like he knew like he could have picked anything.
00:54:52Marc:He was like, we're going on the mummy, man.
00:54:54Marc:Totally.
00:54:55Marc:Yeah, that's great.
00:54:56Marc:And honestly, I need recommendations because I do want to take a vacation.
00:55:00Marc:I think I want to take a roller coaster vacation.
00:55:04Marc:So like I want to like maybe go to Disney, maybe go to this Universal thing.
00:55:08Marc:Like, I don't know.
00:55:09Guest:Well, I'll tell you the roller coaster vacation, though, if you're not looking for like theme park rides, apparently like and I've never been to it.
00:55:16Guest:I had always wanted to go and just never able to go to it.
00:55:18Guest:But the forever, the one that's talked about is like the roller coaster park in America is Cedar Point.
00:55:27Guest:In Sandusky, Ohio.
00:55:29Guest:Oh.
00:55:29Guest:That's, like, apparently, like, the greatest ever.
00:55:32Guest:Really?
00:55:33Guest:Okay.
00:55:33Guest:Yeah.
00:55:34Guest:All right.
00:55:34Guest:Like, if you... I don't know what else is near Sandusky, Ohio.
00:55:37Guest:I just know, like... So I don't know how it, like, works as, like, a destination thing.
00:55:42Guest:Like, I don't know.
00:55:42Guest:Maybe you want to factor it into a trip to Cleveland and you go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or something.
00:55:47Marc:I don't know.
00:55:48Guest:But, like...
00:55:49Marc:That's the one that everybody always points to.
00:55:51Marc:Okay.
00:55:52Marc:I don't know if Aaron's going to be game.
00:55:54Marc:I mean, we do for some reason have family out in Cleveland.
00:55:57Marc:So maybe we do tack this on.
00:56:00Marc:One of my nephews actually going out school there.
00:56:01Marc:Maybe I'll just take them to Cedar Point and have a day doing roller coasters with them.
00:56:07Guest:That's it.
00:56:08Guest:Cedar Point.
00:56:08Guest:That's your rollercoaster capital of America.
00:56:11Marc:By the way, I love that Mark, not a rollercoaster fan, right?
00:56:15Marc:And he said that, oh, you know, one of his exes was a rollercoaster fan.
00:56:20Marc:And I'm thinking, well, of course she loves rollercoasters.
00:56:24Marc:She married one.
00:56:25Marc:Doesn't every woman he date like rollercoasters?
00:56:28Guest:Like, I can't think of a person that would be described as a human rollercoaster more than Mark.
00:56:34Guest:Like, like.
00:56:35Guest:Like, that is the ride, right?
00:56:37Guest:That should just be his, like, song as he walks into the room is the rollercoaster of love.
00:56:44Guest:Yes.
00:56:44Guest:Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
00:56:47Marc:It's like, oh, look, here's the pre-show.
00:56:49Marc:Look, we got cats over here.
00:56:51Marc:We got guitars.
00:56:53Marc:Whoa!
00:56:55Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:56:56Marc:Oh, my God.
00:56:59Marc:I love that roller coasters are probably the biggest mirror to Mark Merritt that there is.
00:57:04Marc:And he's like, nah, not for me.
00:57:07Guest:Yeah.
00:57:07Guest:Well, then, listen, I expect some good recommendations from our listeners.
00:57:11Guest:I know people out there are going to have good ones and have places that we should go.
00:57:15Guest:And specifically, you know, Chris, he's planning a vacation.
00:57:19Guest:Although it seems like you are officially...
00:57:22Guest:on the books for a vacation that you had previously talked about.
00:57:26Guest:Do you want to tell everybody about that?
00:57:27Marc:Yeah, I've planned another trip.
00:57:30Marc:Again, for some reason, it happens to land on Super Bowl Sunday week, which is bizarre to me.
00:57:37Marc:But anyway, my wife and I, we're going on an African safari.
00:57:42Guest:Amazing.
00:57:43Marc:Yeah.
00:57:43Marc:It's our 10 year anniversary.
00:57:45Marc:We planned on either going to an African safari for our honeymoon.
00:57:50Marc:We opted to go to Thailand and Vietnam instead.
00:57:53Marc:So yeah, we're going to an African safari.
00:57:55Marc:I can't wait.
00:57:56Marc:It is very exciting.
00:57:57Guest:I'm so thrilled for you.
00:58:00Guest:It's like one of the top things in the world that you can do.
00:58:04Marc:And like reading all about it is great.
00:58:06Marc:Like just reading about like the top five or the big five that they call it.
00:58:10Marc:By the way, the big five has one of these things is not like the other.
00:58:14Marc:There's lions.
00:58:17Marc:Okay, great.
00:58:18Marc:There's cheetahs.
00:58:19Marc:Awesome.
00:58:19Marc:Elephants.
00:58:20Marc:Fantastic.
00:58:21Marc:Rhinos.
00:58:22Marc:Number four.
00:58:23Marc:Coming in at number five are buffaloes.
00:58:27Marc:What are we doing with buffaloes?
00:58:29Marc:Why are they in the big five, guys?
00:58:31Guest:But like, what kind of buffalo?
00:58:33Marc:An African buffalo.
00:58:35Marc:There's nothing else to it.
00:58:37Marc:It's the same, you know, it's a different species, I guess, than the American buffalo.
00:58:41Marc:But it's like, I'm pretty sure giraffes with like a word.
00:58:45Marc:You know, like, what are we doing?
00:58:48Guest:They don't get called wildebeests.
00:58:50Guest:Isn't that what it, like, it's just like a same thing, like a bison?
00:58:53Marc:Fucking buffalo.
00:58:54Marc:Yeah.
00:58:55Marc:Like, I'm going to be seeing Timon and Pumbaa, and they're not in the top five or big five, but a goddamn buffalo is.
00:59:02Marc:Like, I don't know.
00:59:03Marc:Buffaloes don't have any personality for me.
00:59:05Guest:Well, I do know, just based on what I'm seeing here, that the buffalo is the most dangerous animal of the Big Five.
00:59:12Guest:How's that possible?
00:59:13Marc:I don't know.
00:59:13Marc:I mean, have you seen a lion rip off?
00:59:16Marc:That's what I'm thinking.
00:59:17Guest:Yeah, I don't want to be anywhere near that.
00:59:19Marc:How are buffalo more dangerous than that?
00:59:21Marc:I mean, maybe to humans, but yeah, I don't know.
00:59:24Marc:We're going to have fun, and it's going to be exciting, and a trip like no other.
00:59:28Guest:All right.
00:59:29Guest:Well, hopefully before then, you might be on a coaster somewhere enjoying yourself before the next Super Bowl, especially with the summer coming up.
00:59:38Guest:And so, yes, if anybody has any recommendations, send them in.
00:59:41Guest:The link is in the episode description.
00:59:44Guest:So you can click on that.
00:59:45Guest:Send us your comments, your suggestions, your topics that you want us to talk about here on the show.
00:59:51Guest:And I had mentioned this last week.
00:59:54Guest:I said I didn't really want to say anything about upcoming guests because
00:59:58Guest:They hadn't been recorded yet.
01:00:00Marc:Wait, wait.
01:00:00Marc:So wait, so wait, who's the big mouth?
01:00:02Marc:Is it, is it, because I was thinking, it's like, well, could it be like Mick Jagger?
01:00:06Marc:He has a big mouth or maybe Julia Roberts, like any one of those?
01:00:11Marc:Or honestly, I was thinking of, of course, the show Big Mouth.
01:00:15Guest:Yes, and as I mentioned, it was a return guest, and so that has been recorded with Nick Kroll that will air on Monday.
01:00:23Guest:It is not the only guest, though, that fits that description, and that other one has not been recorded yet, but yeah, Nick Kroll, not the only one that I was thinking of when I said that last week.
01:00:37Marc:Ah, let the guessing games begin.
01:00:39Marc:Go for it.
01:00:40Marc:I have some guesses.
01:00:43Marc:I have some guests.
01:00:43Marc:All right.
01:00:44Guest:Well, if you do, send those in to us, although you'll be finding out very shortly.
01:00:49Guest:Yeah.
01:00:50Guest:And until you do, I am Brendan, and that is Chris.
01:00:53Guest:Peace.
