00:00:44Marc:Is on, I would say, the West Coast, I believe, of Vancouver Islands, of the islands out here.

00:00:52Marc:I don't know how exactly it works in terms of the geography.
00:00:56Marc:I'm kind of clear.
00:00:57Marc:I believe it's on the other side or near the top of Vancouver Island.
00:01:01Marc:It was kind of a fantasy of mine.
00:01:04Marc:to come here for years, it seems.
00:01:06Marc:I was planning a trip to Tofino.
00:01:09Marc:I had talked to Lynn about it many years ago, and before her and I became a thing, I was gonna travel up here with someone else, and then, like, I don't know, it just became this mythical aspiration to come to Tofino.
00:01:26Marc:And finally, I pulled it together, and me and Kit came up here,
00:01:31Marc:And it's beautiful.
00:01:32Marc:We were in Vancouver for a night that was spectacular.
00:01:36Marc:I love that city.
00:01:37Marc:I'm so relaxed up here.
00:01:40Marc:Right away, it just rolls off of me, and it just stands in my mind.
00:01:47Marc:It's a fantasy, man.
00:01:50Marc:Like I'm not one of these people I do not believe who is going to continue working until they're 70 or 80.
00:01:57Marc:I don't know that I have any desire to do that nor see the point unless you need the bread.
00:02:04Marc:And I don't know.
00:02:05Marc:There's something about the Pacific Northwest that has always stood out for me.

00:02:10Marc:I think it has something to do with...
00:02:13Marc:Spending time in Alaska during a very formative period of my life.
00:02:18Marc:I believe my family, we were in Alaska 1969, 1970, 1971, which would make me like six, seven, eight-ish years old.
00:02:28Marc:My father was in the military, but I have very specific memories that are related to the sort of climate and the tone of the woods and the sky and the weight of the landscapes.
00:02:43Marc:I remember going, you know, digging for clams somewhere off the coast of Alaska, fishing for salmon.
00:02:50Marc:And I was, you know, I was young, but there was something very comforting about
00:02:55Marc:about the sort of gray, heavy geography up here that is pretty deep within me.
00:03:03Marc:And anytime I come up here, I definitely immediately reconnect it with it.
00:03:08Marc:It's a vibe that I find comforting.
00:03:10Marc:and i i've definitely grown to appreciate uh the people up here uh in canada without that sort of weird weight of self-driven insanity that is you know kind of eating away at our culture and and at a
00:03:28Marc:And people in general, maybe I'm just projecting, but I don't know.
00:03:33Marc:I'm sure I'm romanticizing, but not needless to say the time up here has been, has been beautiful.

00:03:41Marc:I will tell you about it, but let me, I should try to get this up front and

00:04:03Marc:He's the main character in the miniseries about the making of The Godfather called The Offer.

00:04:10Marc:I enjoyed that thing.

00:04:12Marc:I don't know how much of it was essentially true.

00:04:19Marc:I think that Miles Teller, not knowing anything really about him,
00:04:23Marc:I've always thought he was kind of a movie star.

00:04:30Marc:He has not come on my show, but I thought he did a great job in this.

00:04:37Marc:There was definitely moments where you could see how Al Ruddy was a force to be reckoned with back in his day.
00:04:46Marc:So you do get flourishes of that.
00:04:50Marc:So the trip up here has been, I don't know, we flew into Vancouver with enough time to hang out, walk around the city.
00:04:57Marc:I just planned it.
00:04:57Marc:So we had one night there at a hotel that I like a great deal, that Rosewood, Georgia hotel.
00:05:04Marc:And we went out to a great dinner at this place called Forage.
00:05:07Marc:And we kind of, you know, we just hung out and eased into vacation mode.
00:05:10Marc:Now, the next day, the plan was...
00:05:13Marc:to fly here to Tofino to spend four days hanging around.
00:05:20Marc:We get to the airport.
00:05:22Marc:The flight is running late because of fog coming in an hour.
00:05:25Marc:And then some chatter starts to happen in the terminal that they're going to try to get us to Tofino.
00:05:32Marc:I didn't know that that was a thing.
00:05:34Marc:that that's an announcement also it was very odd this terminal just being it was domestic and within canada uh no security at all which was a strange adjustment kind of made me a little uncomfortable to be honest with you like there's nothing there's no we just get on a plane but i guess it's not we're not here we're not in america anymore so these little planes little jet i don't know how many it's seated probably 20 seater prop plane
00:05:59Marc:But the announcement comes on that they're going to try to get to Vancouver.
00:06:03Marc:And if they can't, they'll turn around and bring us back.
00:06:07Marc:So not great.
00:06:07Marc:Not great for me.
00:06:08Marc:Not great for my anxiety.
00:06:09Marc:Not great for the type of panic I'm capable of.
00:06:12Marc:But we really had no choice.
00:06:14Marc:So the plane lands and they decide to take a chance, I guess, to try it out, to fly the 45 or 50 minutes across the island to Tofino and try to land the plane in this fog bank that comes every day and just sits right on Tofino and along the coast.
00:06:35Marc:So we get up in this little plane, the prop plane.
00:06:37Marc:I'm okay.
00:06:38Marc:It's fine.
00:06:38Marc:I've been on prop planes before.
00:06:40Marc:I'm not freaked about flying.
00:06:41Marc:Don't love circling.
00:06:43Marc:I don't love circling in any plane.
00:06:46Marc:Kit's doing fine with it.
00:06:47Marc:I'm in that moment a little more panicky.
00:06:50Marc:but uh you know we get to tofino and the guy's like i don't know the pilot's literally like we'll hang out a while and see if any of this lifts but i'm going to circle around once so we do two or three circles uh to see if he can see a runway and we're just up there for like 20 minutes a half hour doing these big circles around this fog covered island and

00:07:14Marc:And I don't know what happens if we go back to Vancouver.
00:07:17Marc:I don't know what happens to the room.
00:07:18Marc:I don't know if we can get a room.
00:07:19Marc:The speculation was causing me tremendous anxiety and also just lingering in the air over the fog covered island.
00:07:29Marc:Wasn't a great feeling.
00:07:30Marc:So he says we're going to go around one more time.
00:07:33Marc:and we'll see what we could do so we're we go around and we feel it you know he's going down you know he's going you know i feel him descending i still can't see the ground and just uh some guy in the back of the plane goes i think he's going for it and uh and there we we he did he went for it we came in under through this fog underneath this fog bank he found the runway and landed a lot of suspense for a flight a lot of suspense

00:08:08Marc:Got a car to the hotel.
00:08:10Marc:This place we're staying is beautiful.

00:08:21Marc:And the first day we hung out, took a little hike.
00:08:24Marc:The second day we went on a whale watching boat.
00:08:27Marc:I've never done that.
00:08:28Marc:And again, didn't have high hopes, even though people were like, yeah, there's some whales out there.
00:08:32Marc:People have been seeing them.
00:08:32Marc:I'm like, yeah, I'm going to be on a boat getting nauseous.
00:08:36Marc:for two to three hours and not see shit that's uh that's the way my brain works i don't know what your brain does but there was a little hope there that maybe we would see a whale or something and uh so that more suspense actually just more suspense it's been a suspense filled journey so we get on this whale boat it's a bigger whale boat there's a inside seating and outside seating i immediately get uh
00:09:02Marc:excited to get outside so we go outside and we sit and we go we he drives us into the ocean we're out in the ocean a few miles into the deep ocean i don't love the ocean don't love it we're all life preserved you know we got raincoats on we're ready and
00:09:17Marc:Now, I don't get very seasick, but I definitely get seasick.
00:09:21Marc:Kit did not think she got seasick, but she definitely got seasick.
00:09:25Marc:But it kind of happened later in the ride.
00:09:27Marc:It happens when you're sitting there.
00:09:29Marc:When you're moving, it doesn't happen so much.
00:09:32Marc:But I'm here to tell you
00:09:33Marc:We saw two humpback whales many times in and out of the water.
00:09:38Marc:They didn't come on the boat or nothing, but we saw them.
00:09:41Marc:They were definitely, we went out there and the guy found the whales and the whales were, we were kind of following them around for a while and we kind of saw them go in and out of the water a little bit.
00:09:52Marc:You know, fins, I saw a tail, two big humpback whales, beautiful, amazing, awe-inspiring, everything you kind of want out of seeing a whale in its natural habitat.
00:10:03Marc:Then we start cruising around, and he said he's going to go look for some gray whales somewhere.
00:10:08Marc:And then we see a bunch of sea lions on some little island.
00:10:12Marc:So we got, you know, check that out.
00:10:13Marc:Check that box, sea lions, humpback whales, check.
00:10:17Marc:And then we get to this inlet area, and we see gray whales.
00:10:21Marc:There were two gray whales.
00:10:22Marc:They eat a different thing, so they're in a different water.
00:10:25Marc:Two gray whales.
00:10:26Marc:We saw them, too.
00:10:27Marc:in and out of the water, saw another tail.
00:10:29Marc:But it's like, you know, they're not going to do a dance for you unless you're, I don't know what kind of luck you have to have, but saw the gray whales and then we cruised to another part, saw a bunch of sea otters.
00:10:39Marc:Yeah.
00:10:40Marc:So we spent all that time in the boat, spent all that time on the boat, got incredibly nauseous, but saw humpbacks, gray whales, sea lions, sea otters.
00:10:50Marc:Very rewarding, but I think we're both a little nauseous still a day later.
00:10:54Marc:And then we went to, is it Meads Island?
00:10:58Marc:And did this amazing hike.
00:11:00Marc:A little bit of suspense there.
00:11:02Marc:You know, it was a loop.
00:11:05Marc:But it seemed like there was no one else on the island.
00:11:07Marc:It was this dense sort of Pacific Northwest rainforest loop.
00:11:12Marc:And, you know, the trail was definitely present for almost all of it.
00:11:14Marc:But there was a little patch where it was unclear.
00:11:18Marc:And I had a very rudimentary map.
00:11:20Marc:And we got into a little zone there where it was like, I don't know if it's a trail.
00:11:24Marc:And, you know, kick out a little panicky, but I kept my head together.
00:11:28Marc:I knew that, you know, we would figure it out.
00:11:31Marc:And we got back to where the little four-seater ferry was going to pick us up.
00:11:37Marc:We made it the full loop.
00:11:39Marc:But a little panic, a little suspense.
00:11:41Marc:I didn't think we would be living on the island for any amount of time.
00:11:45Marc:I didn't think there would be cannibalism necessary or a need to set a fire to get help.
00:11:52Marc:I was pretty clear we would...
00:11:54Marc:Figure it out.
00:11:55Marc:But a little suspense there.
00:11:57Marc:Little suspense.
00:11:58Marc:So it's been exciting.

00:12:09Marc:So I went to the pharmacy, got a COVID test.

00:12:14Marc:uh yeah covid test suspense that turned out fine so all in all exciting vacation with um with suspense we didn't expect uh in a lot of ways the airplane suspense not expected whale watch suspense kind of you don't know but that worked out the hike suspense unexpected uh covid suspense didn't didn't need it but used to it at this point and they just give you you could just ask for far at the pharmacy for tests they'll give you a box of five here

00:19:28Guest:We go back in, smoke a little more grass, and suddenly there's a monstrous explosion in the kitchen.

00:19:46Guest:So for three days, I was going to wait for Bob to read the script.
00:19:51Guest:I got up in the morning with him.
00:19:53Guest:The man is a huge, barrel-chested tough guy.

00:20:23Guest:Finally, I'm sitting there with Bob at his house after three days, and just purely in self-defense, I said, Bob, I don't give a shit if you're doing this movie or not.

00:50:40Guest:But what happened when the news of them, of that, came out?
00:50:47Guest:The mob moves in on Gulf and Western.
00:50:51Guest:And there's a nice shot of me with Joe Colombo and the new head of the league, Joe's son, on the front page of the New York Times.

00:51:11Guest:I got out of the room and there's a call from Charlie Bluto and secretary, who we became very friendly.

00:51:27Guest:You just come and show up tomorrow.

00:51:38Guest:I get up and up I go to the top floor, the private floor, which we're in the middle of a major board of directors meeting.

00:52:34Guest:He starts screaming, I'm trying to go legit all my life.
00:52:38Guest:He's screaming like a mother.
00:52:43Guest:Now, sitting in the room is Martin Davis, General Westmoreland, Senator from Washington.
00:52:52Guest:This is a board of directors meeting.
00:52:54Guest:This is a very serious meeting.
00:52:58Guest:So I had no ground to stand on.
00:53:01Guest:I said, let's understand each other, guys.
00:53:05Guest:I don't own one goddamn share of your stock.
00:53:11Guest:I don't own anything on government, and frankly, I don't give a shit about it.
00:53:16Guest:I only care about one thing that was getting my movie made.
00:53:23Guest:I did the one thing which I thought was brilliant to facilitate that acquisition.

00:54:55Marc:And Evans hired you because of your persistence to man this, the helm of the Godfather.

01:00:31Guest:They told you not to go to buy.

01:01:40Guest:what is making movies about if you can't enjoy watching part of it?

01:01:51Guest:Gordon Willis was a genius.

01:01:58Guest:Because when Gordon shot, he didn't even use a cigarette lighter.
01:02:03Guest:He was shooting on the edge so you couldn't fuck with his print.

01:02:15Guest:He didn't want the studio or anyone later to push it up into a tooth so you can see.

01:02:25Marc:Was that a decision that he... That was part of his deal.
01:02:29Marc:When you hired... When you got the opportunity to do The Godfather, Evans puts you on that thing, and you corral these guys together, and you make the decision to let Puzo write the script with Coppola, who had written Patton.

01:02:43Marc:That was my decision.
01:02:44Marc:Yeah, right.
01:02:45Marc:So that was sort of a unique decision at the time, right?
01:02:49Marc:Because they didn't like hiring the guy who wrote the book to write the screenplay because he didn't know how to write a screenplay, right?

01:02:53Guest:I'll tell you that was resolved.
01:02:56Guest:I explained to Mario why he couldn't be hired at Paramount.
01:03:01Guest:I said, the studio doesn't hire people that never wrote a script, but especially the author of the book, because if the book's 600 pages, the script's 600 pages.

01:03:14Guest:He took the book, and he threw it on the floor of the hotel with the park share, and
01:03:20Guest:He said, you hire me, and I swear I will never look at that book again.

01:04:05Guest:And so this was a constant, a constant change.
01:04:09Guest:Not battle, but referral and a certain good between everybody.

01:07:18Guest:But Marlon Brando, I must say, now I give Francis credit for what happened.
01:07:24Guest:We went to Marlon's house with Francis' little camera, and he did the famous tape of Marlon playing the Don.

01:07:33Guest:Now, he didn't do any talking.
01:07:35Guest:He had put cotton in his mouth.

01:07:39Guest:He streaked his hair with a little shoe polish.

01:07:43Guest:He put a pillow in his robe.
01:07:46Guest:got a little Denobli cigar, and got a cup of espresso.
01:07:54Guest:And he did this two-minute thing.
01:08:00Guest:This went to New York with six other tapes that Francis had put together of everyone who should not do The Godfather.

01:09:56Guest:Well, I can tell you this.
01:09:58Guest:His test almost didn't work because the cat is purring so loud.

01:10:03Guest:You can't hear Marlon say anything.

01:10:08Guest:Bob calls me and says, this thing got subtitles?
01:10:11Guest:What the hell did you guys do?
01:10:13Guest:Anyhow, that cat was Marlon.
01:10:16Guest:Beautiful.
01:10:16Guest:But it was a great touch.
01:10:18Guest:But that's what you get.
01:10:20Guest:So it got very compressed.
01:10:24Guest:My life suddenly was part of the time I had watched the budget.
01:10:29Guest:Our deal with Paramount was very simple.
01:10:34Guest:Just to keep Bob happy.
01:10:36Guest:And us promise.
01:10:38Guest:that we would shoot the movie, the entire movie, for under $5 million.
01:10:46Marc:That's crazy.
01:10:49Guest:And then Charlie told Bob, and us...
01:10:53Guest:I'm gonna let you shoot it for the five million.
01:10:57Guest:If you go over one penny, it's all coming out of your salaries.
01:11:02Guest:You, Francis, and Bob doesn't have to worry.
01:11:05Guest:So that was our five million dollars.
01:11:11Guest:But Bob was fighting every step of the way for us to get what we needed.
01:11:17Guest:and there were scenes with Charlie and Bob where Bob put it all on.
01:11:22Guest:He put his career on the line.
01:11:24Guest:Yeah, a couple times, right?
01:11:26Guest:A couple times.
01:11:26Guest:He told Frankie Blanz, when Frank McKenna had a distribution, Frankie said, he does not put any movie out that's two hours and 53 minutes.
01:11:38Guest:No movie.
01:11:39Guest:Right.
01:11:40Guest:And Bob said, this movie goes out at 2.50 or I'm leaving.
01:11:47Guest:Now, Francis cut it down at 220.
01:11:51Guest:Anyhow, it was terrible.
01:11:54Guest:So now he calls.
01:11:55Guest:We're all sitting in this room.
01:11:58Guest:And he calls New York up and speaks to the fucking guy.
01:12:02Guest:And he tells him, he says, if you don't put this movie out at 254, I'm quitting this job, Frank.
01:12:14Guest:And Frank was so angry, he said, do anything you want, you assholes out there.
01:12:24Guest:I want to watch you crash and burn.
01:12:26Guest:So put your goddamn movie on at 250 and slam the phone down.
01:12:32Guest:But we were on our way.
01:12:34Guest:But he cared.
01:12:35Guest:He cared a lot.
01:12:36Guest:Sure.
01:12:37Guest:You guys, you sort of created the blockbuster in a way, right?
01:12:41Guest:We did, actually.
01:12:43Guest:I didn't.
01:12:44Guest:Paramount, we started generating so much publicity.
01:12:48Guest:It was ridiculous.
01:12:50Guest:When we were shooting at restaurants,
01:12:53Guest:We used to hide everyone and people would just stand around, hundreds and hundreds of people just watching crowds because you had a register in New York when you were shooting on the street.
01:13:05Guest:Well, it finally got so bad
01:13:08Guest:that the mayor gave us the right not to list where we're shooting.
01:13:12Guest:But they found out anyhow.
01:13:14Guest:Who was the mayor?
01:13:14Guest:Lindsey?
01:13:15Guest:Lindsey was the mayor.
01:13:17Guest:And Lindsey was great to us.
01:13:19Guest:So he helped us all the way through.
01:13:20Guest:Oh, good.
01:13:22Guest:And we didn't have to post, but it was getting outrageous.
01:13:26Marc:With the people on the streets?
01:13:27Guest:Outrageous.
01:13:28Marc:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:13:28Marc:So they created this idea.
01:13:31Marc:At that time, they used to run movies in bigger cities than bigger markets, sometimes for months, I guess.
01:13:36Marc:And then with The Godfather, they put it all over the country at once.
01:13:40Guest:What they did, no one had ever block booked a movie the way Paramount did.
01:13:46Guest:For the first time ever, and it made me very nervous in New York, they agreed to open The Godfather in New York.
01:13:54Guest:You ready for this?
01:13:55Guest:Yeah.
01:13:56Guest:At 25 theaters.
01:13:59Guest:Yeah.
01:14:00Guest:I said, Frank, we'll be out of business in a week.
01:14:03Guest:You can't run this business.
01:14:05Guest:You weren't confident with that.
01:14:07Guest:I wanted to run for history forever.
01:14:09Guest:Yeah.
01:14:09Guest:I want to play fun.
01:14:10Guest:I said, hey, I'd rather be famous for years.
01:14:14Guest:It didn't matter.
01:14:15Guest:They opened the movie.
01:14:17Guest:As long as I live, I'll never forget it.
01:14:20Guest:I got up early, and I went around to see if there was anyone waiting in line to see the movie.
01:14:26Guest:Really?
01:14:28Guest:It was slight drizzle, and there were people...
01:14:32Guest:Thousands of people waiting.
01:14:35Guest:Yeah.
01:14:36Guest:In line in front of the movie theater, down the block, as far as I could see it.
01:14:43Guest:All waiting in line for The Godfather.
01:14:46Guest:Amazing.
01:14:47Guest:I was stunned.
01:14:49Guest:Yeah.
01:14:49Guest:Everyone was stunned.
01:14:51Guest:Yeah.
01:14:52Guest:It was a success.
01:14:54Guest:You only dream of that.
01:14:56Guest:Sure.
01:14:56Guest:And that kind of thing never happens.
01:14:58Marc:It was amazing.
01:14:59Marc:All the way through.
01:15:00Guest:It was amazing.
01:15:01Marc:All the way through to the Oscars.
01:15:02Guest:People were paying people to stay in line for them.
01:15:05Guest:They did.
01:15:06Guest:Yeah.
01:15:07Guest:But anyhow, so it had a life, a life of its own.
01:15:14Marc:Now, was that mob screening?
01:15:16Marc:Was that a real thing?
01:15:17Marc:Did that happen?
01:15:18Marc:Did you screen it for the mob so they could sign off on it?
01:15:21Marc:I promised that.
01:15:22Guest:When I made my deal with Joe, I promised I would give them the charity, a charity screening.
01:15:30Guest:Yeah.
01:15:30Guest:Because every Italian has a church or a hospital.
01:15:35Guest:Sure.
01:15:36Guest:So I gave them the right to, I'm going to screen for them.
01:15:39Guest:Well, after I had my blow up, I was going to be fired.
01:15:44Guest:Oh, yeah.
01:15:45Guest:Yeah.
01:15:46Guest:And they weren't going to make any more screenings for the mob.
01:15:50Guest:That was all disavowed.
01:15:51Guest:Any deal I had made with the boys was over.
01:15:55Guest:But I was back on the movie when Charlie said, don't ever talk to them.
01:16:01Guest:And the interesting thing is, because I didn't try to dump the Godfather, the boys.
01:16:07Guest:Yeah.
01:16:08Guest:I got a call from Joe.
01:16:10Guest:He said, I wanted to know one thing, Mr. Ruddy.
01:16:14Guest:I said, what's that?
01:16:16Guest:He said, we all realized you were a stand-up guy.
01:16:21Guest:That's important to them.
01:16:23Guest:He said, when we were kicked out, you didn't try to bum us out.
01:16:29Guest:And so I'm with you no matter what happens.
01:16:33Guest:Anytime you need me, all you have to do is call me.
01:16:38Guest:Because you were there for us.
01:16:40Guest:And he always was.
01:16:43Guest:He became a close friend of mine.
01:16:46Guest:I used to go to his house for dinner with me and his wife.
01:16:50Guest:And they were just great, great, great to me.
01:16:53Guest:And as I say, he never asked me for a penny.
01:16:57Guest:He only wanted the word mafia taken out, which I gave him.
01:17:01Marc:And the mob signed off on the movie, right?
01:17:04Marc:They liked it.
01:17:06Marc:They like it?
01:17:08Guest:I'll put it this way.
01:17:10Guest:I was having trouble running a screening for them.
01:17:14Guest:There was one print under lock and key in the projection room.
01:17:19Guest:I could have gone to jail for this, so you know.
01:17:23Guest:The projectionist was a friend of mine.
01:17:26Guest:I said, you gotta get me a print of the movie for a night.
01:17:29Guest:You gotta run it.
01:17:31Guest:He said, Al, I can't do that.
01:17:33Guest:I said, you have to.
01:17:35Guest:You have to.
01:17:36Guest:You have to for me.
01:17:38Guest:I can't go back on this thing.
01:17:40Guest:He said, I don't know why I do this shit.
01:17:45Guest:So they rent a screening room.
01:17:48Guest:A little screening room.
01:17:51Guest:And I invite the boys.
01:17:54Guest:It was about...
01:17:57Guest:There must have been at least 100 limousines parked on this old side street.
01:18:04Guest:And this guy comes, he takes print, and he runs the movie for the guys.
01:18:10Guest:Yeah.
01:18:11Guest:And then he takes it.
01:18:14Guest:When the movie's over, the guy calls me from the projection.
01:18:18Guest:He says, I'm leaving, but I want you to do one thing.
01:18:22Guest:In all the years I've done this job, I've never seen any guy do what you can do.
01:18:28Guest:And nobody ever gave me a $1,000 tip.
01:18:32Guest:They loved the movie.
01:18:36Guest:They loved the movie.
01:18:38Guest:And I owned the boys after that.
01:18:40Guest:They loved it.
01:18:42Guest:And it was always that closeness based on trust.
01:18:47Guest:I trusted Joe, and Joe trusted me.
01:18:50Marc:And then you won the Oscar Best Picture, and then you won it again years later for Million Dollar Baby.
01:18:56Guest:Well, what happened was we never had any idea we were going to get an Academy Award.
01:19:02Guest:Sure.
01:19:02Guest:We were a pulp movie.
01:19:04Guest:It's a pulp book.
01:19:05Guest:That's why, you know, Warren had it, Jack had it.
01:19:08Guest:Everyone turned it down.
01:19:10Guest:Fred Zittiman said it.
01:19:12Guest:It's a gangster movie.
01:19:13Guest:What's everyone talking about?
01:19:14Guest:Well, when the movie opened, we opened in...
01:19:18Guest:February, March.
01:19:19Guest:Yep.
01:19:20Guest:You don't open Academy right time in the spring.
01:19:24Guest:Yeah.
01:19:24Guest:You open it, as you know, in the fall.
01:19:26Guest:Right.
01:19:27Guest:But the movie wouldn't go away.
01:19:29Guest:It started dropping off, but it still hung in there.
01:19:33Guest:So we said, oh, no, it's crazy.
01:19:37Guest:You want to try to get an Academy Award in November?
01:19:41Guest:Charlie says, no, you don't spend any money.
01:19:43Guest:Remember, you spend your money.
01:19:46Guest:I said, well, let's go.
01:19:48Guest:So we started another campaign.
01:19:51Guest:Yeah.
01:19:52Guest:At the end of the hunt, at the end of the fucking hunt, that night, again, which we will all remember.
01:20:01Guest:Yeah.
01:20:02Guest:We sit here.
01:20:05Guest:Francis didn't get it.
01:20:07Guest:Mario got nominated.
01:20:10Guest:No big deal.
01:20:13Guest:Brando got it, right?
01:20:14Guest:Brando got it, but didn't show up.
01:20:16Guest:So now, Charlton Heston was supposed to present the award for Best Picture.
01:20:22Guest:But his car was screwed up on the freeway.
01:20:26Guest:So they asked Clint Eastwood, who was a friend of mine, if he would present it.
01:20:32Guest:So Clint says, I'm only giving this award because I'm sure you're going to get it.
01:20:37Guest:i said clint look at it you're a friend of mine when you open up the envelope the only person's gonna know it's not me is you yeah so he just swallowed the answer and say the winner is already yeah he laughed yeah yeah sure anyhow when he got up there he said the nominees are dot dot dot dot
01:21:02Guest:And the winner is Al Ruddy.
01:21:06Guest:I said, what a friend.
01:21:07Guest:I swear to God, you have a shot at me.
01:21:11Guest:Clint has to show me.

01:21:54Marc:Now, let me ask you a question before we finish up.
01:21:57Marc:Do you ever look, because I love The Longest Yard, and you've done many movies, but you made a decision when offered to do Godfather 2 to not do it and pursue The Longest Yard, which was also a history-making movie.
01:22:10Marc:Do you ever regret that decision?
01:22:11Guest:Never.
01:22:12Marc:That's good.
01:22:13Marc:Look at this one.
01:22:14Guest:Yeah.
01:22:14Guest:Look, there's a hundred more stories.

01:23:10Guest:I had a meeting with an actor who was getting hot named Burt Reynolds.

01:23:14Guest:He was shooting the man who loved cat dancing up in Salt Lake.
01:23:19Guest:I went up and I met Burt, and I was looking in life at my character, Paul Cruz, and he said to me,
01:23:29Guest:I have to do your movie.
01:23:31Guest:I have to do it.
01:23:33Guest:I want you to direct it, write it.
01:23:35Guest:You do everything.
01:23:36Guest:It's my movie.
01:23:38Guest:I said, you got it.
01:23:40Guest:You're perfect.
01:23:41Guest:You're the way I envisioned porn.
01:23:44Guest:So I shake his hand.
01:23:47Guest:I make my commitment right there to Bert Reynolds to play the part.
01:23:53Guest:When I came back, I told my lawyer who was very unhappy.
01:23:57Guest:He said, I can get you a lot of money to just give him back the rights.
01:24:02Guest:I said, Bruce, they want me to do it.
01:24:05Guest:I don't want to do it.
01:24:07Guest:And I explained it to everyone.
01:24:09Guest:I explained it to Mario.
01:24:10Guest:I explained it to Bob.

01:24:14Guest:And when I showed up on the set,
01:24:18Guest:It was like living a dream.
01:24:20Guest:I'm on the set watching this movie of the longest yard being made.
01:24:26Guest:And watched it all the way through.
01:24:29Guest:And it became a huge success.
01:24:34Guest:We snuck it.
01:24:35Guest:in Texas because Bob Aldrich, who is a marvelous director, only snuck movies in Texas.
01:24:42Guest:So the first time we snuck it, we took it to his first place.
01:24:45Guest:We went to Houston.
01:24:47Guest:When I say the audience went ballistic, they're throwing popcorn in the air.
01:24:52Guest:Do it, motherfucker, dum-dum!
01:24:54Guest:Frank calls me up.
01:24:56Guest:They had a distribution.
01:24:58Guest:He says, Jesus, I hear it was fantastic.
